Mint 69 Ludwig. Too mint to be true?? Last viewed: 37 minutes ago

I've been checking out this Ludwig Super Classic kit on feebay. It's very pricey because the seller is claiming that it's in all original condition. I just can't help but wonder though, is this a really good re-wrap?

Any info would be greatly appreciated, even at least if it helps at least one vintage enthusiast to become a little more educated.

Thanks all.

There will be others on here with a more definitive answer but the wrap should be tucked into the scarf joint and it doesn't look like it does on the photo in the listing. The wrap looks very new and the BD hoops have been painted (not that that's a problem necessarily).

I agree with Fayray, The appears to be a re-wrap. Two pics clearly show the wrap seams. I would ask for close up pics of the inside of shells at vent grommets and above the seams at a minimum.

I am sure you could get a nice 69 re-wrap on VDF for less.

Tough one. It is possible that it's legit since right around this time Ludwig stopped having the wrap follow into the wood seam like all prior wraps. I have a '69 Hollywood where 1 tom follows into the seam & the other sits exactly like it shows in your ebay listing overlapping outside the seam.

The chrome seems rather pristine to go along with the overall smoking condition.

Hmmm yeah there's also something odd by the way the keystone badge is sitting on the BD. Also I know this was a transitional period for Ludwig, but I thought the clear interiors came about with the B/O badge, and came with paper tags.

Of course not a problem, the sound of the shells will still be there, but wow for that money it needs to be original.

Not quite yet, I believe. My kit's dated July '69 & has Keystone badges & no paper tags. As for the way the grommet's sitting on the bd - I've seen enough vintage Ludwig kits & they are not always sitting as pretty as you'd expect. Sometimes they're way loose, slightly bent, etc.

Ah right. It's a tough call. I would be tempted, if that wrap is real and the chrome is the result of a good cleaning job then it could be a great investment for years and years to come. Should make an outstanding studio kit.

I've read around here the wrap came out of the scarf when the clear interiors came about in '69 ?

With that said, however, the exterior scarf looks shortened to me.....whatever that might mean...

Chris,

Good call on all you've said! This was indeed a transitional period for Ludwig, and during those periods it seems that just about anything goes! I mentioned in another thread just recently about a '69 Hollywood kit I had... one drum with a keystone badge, the others all with B/Os. All with clear interiors. All serial numbers pointed to 1969.

And, I'm not sure when they transitioned to not having the wrap into the seem... but I have seen plenty of clear-interior Ludwigs where it wasn't.

Now, I'm not trying to say this is NOT a rewrap... but it's not necessarily easy to tell for sure just by looking a pictures!
