I posted a thread on when I was in the purchase phase of my current Ludwig kit. I thought I would share the finished product. As you all know, early 1976 was the last year the 3 ply's were available and this kit has the hard to find 3ply toms that came in 6,8,10, and 12 sizes. I believe these toms were only made during 1975 and the first months of 1976 before Ludwig went to the 6ply shells.

The smaller toms were originally concert toms, but I converted them to dual headed toms. The concert toms already had the bearing edges from the factory, so I added the lower hardware. I know the vintage gurus will be upset that I modified this kit, but I am a drum player, not a collector. However, I figure if Ludwig didnt want heads on the lower concert tomes they shoulddnt have cut the bearing edges at the factory :) The smaller toms are very shallow, so the lugs had to be offset, but I dont think they turned out too bad. Before everyone tars and feathers me, this was a player's kit to start with. The 13 and 14 tom had bayonet mounts added in addition to the the normal mounts. I removed those mounts, and I removed the mufflers. I kept all the hardware in the event I want to add the mufflers back at some point in the future

I am in heaven on Earth - I have a large vintage 3ply maple kit that sounds phenomenal! Without a doubt, this is the best drum set that I have ever owned, and I dont ever see myself playing another kit....ever.

Sizes are 6,8,10,12,13,14,16,18, and 24. Snare is Supra 402. Heads are coated A's over coated A's with the exception of the 6,8, and 10 which are coated A's over coated diplomats. I needed a thinner head on the smaller toms since they are so shallow. Cymbals are all Paiste Signatures with the exception of one Sabian splash.

Hey man not every drum set has to be vintage correct. If you are happy then that is all that matters. I for one love you kit, its a beauty. thanks for the pics! Interesting that the concert toms had edges, I had a couple a while back and they had an aluminum band around the bottom of the drum. Keep hiitin them!

Yes, it is a blast to play. Even though its a big kit, it is easy to play both from an ergonomic and functional perspective. The kit turned out better that I had hoped for. The drums are thunderous yet they have a tone that is mellow and pleasing. My wife even loves the sounds of these 3plys. Having a kit that was made when I was 5 years old is just cool. I often wonder what these drums have seen in their lifetime. What gigs they played or by whom they were played by. My drum "mechanic" who drilled the holes says he hasnt seen a kit this clean in a long, long time. None of the lugs had any pitting and the wrap is very clean except for some seam shrinkage on the bass drum. He did add some glue to some of the inner rings since there was some very minor separation. They have a new lease on life, and I will have this kit until the day I die. I am a very happy camper.

Those came out really nice. I have some 3 ply concert toms I bought in 74 that have the rerings on the batter and open side with bearing edges cut on the open side too. I also have a couple of the 6 ply with the chrome rim on the reso side. I like my 74's a lot.
