Magnus congrats on the new 7 liner Dyna. A beauty she is and really good price. I remember reading somewhere (here probably) about some of the COB Dyna shells being out of round from the factory. I forgot about it until I read your post. I'll try to find the info and post it.

Hi Glenn,

Thanks, that is very interesting, though slightly worrying, information. If you find the source, please do post it.

Best,

Magnus

My mistake Magnus. It was someone selling a COB dyna with the bottom slightly out of round. Sorry about that. Confused with something else.

No problem at all, Glenn.

Nice drum.

The screws on the frame look ok to me, and the Pursounds will fit, as you are already aware.

That is the classic 'clockface' strainer. Also known as the 'Permatension' strainer in the earlier catalogs. The later 'square side' strainer, the 'Swivomatic', started around 1966-7.

The tension rods on your drum: not sure if they are Rogers, but if they are they are from a much later drum.

As long as the top head goes on without any real trouble, the drum will tune up fine.

Thanks, DanC, for valuable information. The tension rods look like those on my 1977 Big R Dyna. Perhaps they are from a later drum. They have no pitting at all, but then, neither does the drum and rims.

The top head goes on with some pressure (no worse than on my Acrolite), but I cannot spin it on the shell, at least not without effort. I will know soon for sure how it will tune up, although the heads it came with seemed to tune up ok after the Dawn bath.

So, just to report back: Today, I received the Puresound wires and the Ambassador Hazy reso head - the Coated Diplomat batter is yet to arrive in Sweden, so I am still using the oldish but seemingly unused Ambassador Coated that came with the drum.

And the drum seems to be ok, it tunes up and it sounds great with the new snares.

I had to fiddle around a bit with the height adjustment screws on the snare bridge before the Puresound wire would lie flat on the frame and not bow out, due to being pulled down too much at the ends by the two fastening screws.

I have played the drum for perhaps fifteen minutes only. It has a slightly softer, darker, warmer sound than my Big R (with original wires). This may be due to the wires or the reso heads being different (the Big R has an Aquarian reso head). It also seems slightly crisper and/or more responsive and dynamic than the Big R. The two sound more different than I would have thought and I am not sure which one I prefer, if any. They both sound great.

I am yet to try it with a Diplomat batter. Perhaps I won't even like that? So far, I am happy with this drum, and starting next week I will play it regularly for a while and see what I think. Pity about the Big R, though. Perhaps I will go back and forth between the two.

Regarding the bowing of the snare wires; I have cut strips of felt to lay underneath and "support" the snare wires. I find this helps the snares lay flat on the frame, and also separates the metals, perhaps letting the snares resonate better. I noticed this when strumming them when getting the right tension on the frame.

Magnus glad you got the Dyna dialed in. Tommy P's tutorial here is a great "how to" for setting them up. Also the factory brochure. Not sure of you saw them but here they are in case.

These really helped me setup mine and understand fully how they work.

I had a Ambassador batter head on mine and lost some sensitivity close to the edge. I bought a Remo Diplomat batter and that reeled it back in. It's funny I can tune it low and fat or high and crisp. And everything in between. Mine is a early 5 line drum and I love it.
