From Zeta

3 days ago I picked one up! Very sad condition, but I knew how rare they were and couldn't pass it up. I had a 13" Silver Sparkle tom that I was $20 into and the guy needed it for completing a set so straight traded me. Unfortunately the original owner drill a bunch of holes when the plastic lugs started breaking.

sad that someone drilled them. regular metal Ludwig lugs would have fit right in those holes.

Cell phone pics :/ Good thing is I have a handful of the original lugs. I can get 1 original bass drum hoop from the guy I traded. And the badgers and mufflers are all there too

looks like they attempted to convert it from a single center lug to a separate lug setup. these drums would be worth plugging the extra holes and putting back to the original state,i think.

Oh YEAH! And, the same finish as Jeff's kit. Okay, Jeff is the wood wiz around here. How hard is it to plug those holes? Also, I'm sure you'd end up putting snare lugs on it, as finding a set of Ludwig plastic lugs will not be easy, but still...

Well worth restoring. Educator's are RARE (yes, in caps) and everyone here knows how I feel about the 'R' word! :)

Awesome! I am very glad I had the feeling I could not leave without them.

My very next questions were:

Do I plug the holes and leave the wrap?

How should I go about plugging the holes? With a dowel rod? With Wood Filler?

Should I store the remaining original lugs and replace them with Clubdate style lugs to make it a playable kit?

How do I go about replacing the missing bass hoop? Find a maple cortex hoop? Store the original I have and play it with worldmax hoops?

Anything Else I'm missing?

Zeta, those are really interesting. Someone sure got in a hurry with a drill, too bad, Id like to drill a hole in their head!

Craig, thanks for pointing me out as the wood wiz. Fixing holes in shells like these is a whole different ball game then filling nail holes. I think the use of dowel rods is fine but how do you patch the wrap? I have seen where guys have taken tiny pieces of wrap from under a lug to make a repair but that was on a sparkle wrap. This being maple would really show if you did that. Would it work to get some of the really long club date bass drum lugs and span over all the holes or are the holes to close to the edge? Hmmm, I think you should start a thread in the restoring section, maybe someone will have a good idea. In the meantime, I will try to think of something.

Just went back to the op and forgot you mentioned that you have a handful of original lugs. Do you have enough?

Thank you!

Very unfortunate kit, I'm really gad I was able to get them now before another person did more damage.

It real is a pain because some of the holes are close to the edge and some are not, I have a set of 10 marching lugs that probably would cover all of the holes on the kick, but that would require me drilling way to many new holes lol.

I have maybe 10 of the lugs. The guy I got them from says he has a bag of parts for me, If I'm lucky more lugs are in that bag, but I am a little doubtful on that.

I'll copy this over to the restore thread soon, hopefully we can get this kit to its full potential.

Please don't drill any new holes in these drums. That would be very bad. Would you mind taking some hi rez pix of these shells? Especially pictures of the badges and interiors. I'd like to use your drums as part of a paper I'm SLOWLY putting together. Thanks - Craig
