My New/Old Sky Blue Pearl Pre-Serial J-Fest Last viewed: 1 hour ago

As advertised! Here she is:

My SBP pre-serial number Hollywood kit -finally- has a 'matching' snare. I am so happy to see the kit completed with a matching snare, not that the one that came with the kit was anything to sneeze at! The kit came with a COB Super! It's just such a beautiful set of drums, I really wanted a matching J-Fest to make it a 'catalog perfect' kit. I will post pix of the kit later.

There's a story behind this one and how I got it. If it wasn't for my friend, Mike Layton, (BTW, Happy Birthday, Mike!) I wouldn't even have the drum!

I dropped out of ebay and Paypal (because I really hate those guys!) almost two years ago. Which means... I can't buy anything on ebay! Mike knew I had been keeping my eyes open for a matching jazzfest for my kit. Pre-serial badge jazzfests in sky blue pearl and in excellent condition, do not come up for sale very often. A couple of weeks ago, Mike spotted one on fleabay and pm'd me a heads up about the drum. I went into a mild panic because; I hadn't seen one come up for sale in a dogs age, and - I didn't have the cash-on-hand to buy this one. I was left with a real dilemma...

The Plan: I wanted the j-fest so badly, I decided to sell my beloved pre-serial COB Super in order to finance the purchase of the j-fest. I was under time constraints because the j-fest auction was set to run for 7 days, the clock was ticking!

I put up an ad in the For Sale section for the COB and then I sat back and patiently waited to see how long it would take to find a buyer. Some of my friends were asking me (in the for sale thread,) why I was selling the COB. I explained and told them the story and how I really didn't want to sell the COB, A. Because I love the drum, and B. Because I needed the $ to buy the hard-to-find J-fest.

The cavalry rides in, in the guise of Mike Layton, who not only performed the transaction for me on ebay (which I couldn't do,) but he talked the guy down a $150. less than his asking, Buy It Now price. As if that isn't enough, he used his own account to pay for everything! How am I lucky enough to have friends like that?

Bottom line: The J-fest sits behind my drum kit as we speak. I got it yesterday, and I haven't been able to keep my hands off of it. It has the Classic Jazzfest Pop and growl and I'm in deep monkey-love with the drum.

A big public thank you to my Goomba Mike, without who, I would not have this drum. It was like X-mas, my birthday and the 4th of July all rolled into one. Nobody has done anything this nice for me - in years! I want to wish Mike (and everyone) a happy, healthy, prosperous holiday season and new year, and also, a very happy birthday to Mike Layton today!

I'll post pix of the kit with its new J-fest a little later. I'm having a ball playing them!

I don't have a Santa hat... but I'll pose with the drums for you. Don't know why you'd want to see my ugly mug... it'll only ruin the picture! :Santa:

Purdie,

That snare looks incredible and it's a great story. Even though I don't have any, I think Sky Blue Pearl may be my favorite finish. Please assemble the whole drum family for a holiday portrait. Can't wait to see 'em all!

It's great that we can come together and share/discuss our passion of vintage drums, and help each other out every once in a while. Kudos, gents!

I had my wife get a few shots of me playing and one holding up the J-fest. The second 12" tom (it's a 63' Hollywood set-up, 2 - 12" rack toms,) is in a case and doesn't have any heads on it. I play the kit 1-up, 1-down. The drums are in cherry condition for a 50+ year old kit and they sound excellent. The new/old J-fest fits right in.

Thanks, Mike... me and Mikey go back a couple of years now, there's been a lot of water gone under the bridge. He's three states away, but every bit as close as a friend who lives around the corner. Mike is, and has always been, a really good and decent guy. I deeply appreciate his friendship and his trust in me. That means more to me than anything. Can't take money to the grave, but love and respect is something else.
