I have my '90 Ludwig Hammered Bronze Supra I bought new & I've slowly been replacing all the chrome & going with brass hardware.

I've had the P-33B butt for about a week & today the P-86B strainer arrived, yay!

So I grab a couple of keys, screwdriver , small wrench, pour myself a cocktail & go to work :D

Uh oh.....the P-33B is not a drop-in replacement, the original holes are too far apart & too small :(.

So, do I drill the holes for it (I'm very handy, have all the proper tools, micrometer, metal bits, punch) or should I just suck it up & continue to use the P-32, with it's easily strippable flathead screws? I've never liked the design, always wondered why Ludwig couldn't at least use Phillips machine screws so that when you tighten it you don't have to worry so much about the screwdriver slipping & gouging into the finish.

I considered using Allen screws but that's a tiny wrench that I'm sure would get lost just when I need it.

I like the design of the P-33, with it's drumkey screws to hold the snare cord/strap, but do I like it enough to drill on my shell?

What do y'all think?

Here's a pic of my baby:

Your asking the wrong people weather or not to drill a drum. Its a beauty for sure but there is something about keeping things original.

Thank you!

No drilling. that's for oil rigs. make a metal adapter plate to mount the new strainer onto, then drill the original holes to it.

It baffles me,why Ludwig made the P-33 ,with a different hole pattern, than the P-32.The P-86 with bolt up to a P-32/P-85 mounting pattern,so that made perfect sense.....so why not the butt plate Ludwig?I'd bet real money, you'd sell more P-33's if it would bolt right on.

You already have the parts...you have already upgraded the lugs.. If the new butt will cover the existing holes I would do it... they are a nice butt plate...

Cheers

John

(Maybe with a small brass shim internal to cover the holes)

It's not the strainer, it's the butt plate, lemme see if I can get pics of it.
