From longjohn

You already have the parts...you have already upgraded the lugs.. If the new butt will cover the existing holes I would do it... they are a nice butt plate... CheersJohn(Maybe with a small brass shim internal to cover the holes)

I'm kinda leanin' this way & I like your idea of the shim.

From tamadrm

It baffles me,why Ludwig made the P-33 ,with a different hole pattern, than the P-32.The P-86 with bolt up to a P-32/P-85 mounting pattern,so that made perfect sense.....so why not the butt plate Ludwig?I'd bet real money, you'd sell more P-33's if it would bolt right on.Steve B

I wouldn't mind askin' them that question myself.

I've made my decision: Drill!

It's not a particularly rare drum & the P-33 will cover the holes & it'd be far too much work to make a bracket. I will probably keep it 'til I can't play anymore or I shuffle off this mortal coil.

I'll take pics once I get it done.

It's his drum, Jerry. I wouldn't alter a Ludwig bronze drum shell in any way, but it's not our call. Those bronze snares are some of the best sounding/playing snare drums that that company ever manufactured. If there is -any way- to maintain it in its original condition, that would be the way to go. Why leave an altered metal shelled drum for posterity? It would be nice if 75 or 100 years from now some kid can pick up your drum in a second hand store and have it be in original condition, it would be a wonderful thing.

Too many great drums to list here!

you know.....75+ yrs from now......this drum even being able to be bought at anywhere....will be the coolest thing ever. especially if it is still playable.

i say drill. just use your head while doing so.

The alteration here is not going to change the sound.. It is a better functioning butt plate and a great cosmetic improvement. Having read more, I believe that it may be just a case of enlarging two holes..

once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.
