Hello everyone. I've been wanting to learn to play the drums for years now, just never had any drums. A couple of weeks ago I was at a garage sale, digging through the rest of his junk (I'm a full blown junker) and stumbled across these leather cases. They had Ludwig written on them. I checked a few of the bags out and sure enough, Ludwig drum set. I asked him how much he wanted for them and he told me just to haul them off. Now I know nothing about drums but I had to pay him something. I gave him $100 figuring worst case scenario, I could always get my hundred back in parts or cymbals (yep, cymbals too) if they were trashed. So I took them home to check them out. It's taken me about two weeks to figure out how everything goes but I got it........I hope. So now I need to learn how to play them. Anyway, here's a pic of them. High hat's not in the pic but it did come with it. I look forward to checking out the forum and learning all I can. Oh yeah, from what I can tell from the badge, they are from1972. Thanks guys and I hope this pic works.

Welcome to the forum. I'm pretty new here myself, and mostly come here to learn rather than dispense advice. I'd say that's quite a score - those are some really nice drums, and it was a nice gesture on your part to give the guy some money. Good job. Is it me, or is there a weird piece of metal on the underside of the left-hand side cymbal?

Anyway, congratulations and good luck learning to play. I would suggest following the route I did; find yourself a good teacher, and play along to some of your favorite music. In my case, it was the Beatles, and I owe as much to Ringo as I do to all the teachers I've had all over the years. If you've truly got the bug, it won't be a chore to practice, but a lot of fun.

Good luck.

Thanks man. That was a piece of duct tape on the underside of the cymbal. I've been sitting here, reading some of the post, holy **** I've got a long road ahead of me. lol One thing I am going to do is get some more pictures up, let some of the experts tell me what they think. First thing for her is a bath, give her a good scrubbing. Then some polishing. Wish I knew something about cymbals. One thing I've learned tonight is don't clean them. Really enjoying the post though.

Thanks grantro. I will get some more pics up. I'd like to know more about the cymbals. The high hats are zildjian and they are both autographed on the underside. Probably shouldn't be playing those, huh? I saw them in another post but that was hours ago. The other two cymbals are marked "avedis zildjian". Really hard to make out. Ok, I'm off to the cymbal section.

Bob, you dog! Excellent score on those Ludwigs! I have been here for about two years and can help you with the cleaning. I too am learning how to play. I did play for several years but took a 20 year break, so ya, Im learning all over.

If you you want an idea what you have, go to ebay and search Ludwig Blue oyster, then click the completed listings and you will see what these have sold for in the past. You will be surprized.

Many of great guys here to help you out. All you need is some Dawn dish soap and a product called Novus to get them shells looking real nice. As far as other products for rust, you will get different suggestions from the guys here but they are all good ones.

Welcome and have fun with those new drums.

Jeff C

Thank you!
