hi to all, my name is robyn. i'm not a "real" drummer, i just like to play them for fun and have found they make for a good "work out" too. i love music, have been exposed to it all my life. i have, well have had, many musicians in my family, a cup'l of them being drummers. anyway, i came here for some help. i have a camco drum set, oaklawn, il era. got it from my aunt who was a pretty good drummer until her health went to(h...) the birds.

anyway, i need help with the snare. the snare turner offer thingy broke (sorry not sure what it is called) and would like to fix it or replace it with the same type. i'd like to stay original if possiable.

i'll add a photo of my kit and photos of the broken piece.

my kit:[Attachment: 50880]

broken piece:[Attachment: 50882]

this is the original:[Attachment: 50881]

i was told a guy by the name of Dolfan was the camco expert and could probly help me, so if you are out there Dolfan HELP! :)

Robyn,

None of us are "real" drummers, they hang out at DrumForum.Org. Just ask them!

p.s. Don't mention Brad Carlson...

Beautiful drums! You have a little work to do, but so worth it.

Sounds like you have a real attachment to them, but just in case.... don't ever let anyone talk you into selling them. You'll regret it.

Sorry I'm of no help with your throw-off, but there are experts here to put you on the right path.

Best,

Aaron

Steve (Dolfan) posted a complete step-by-step tutorial (with photos) on how to repair those strainers. Look it up in the archive. And for the love of Ghod, please replace the bottom lugs and hoops on the toms and bass drum before they start to go out of round. Ruining any drum kit is already bad Ju-Ju, but ruining a Camco kit will buy you an eternal stint in Hell! lol

Seriously... replace all heads and hoops. Eventually, the drums will warp without them on.

Sweet, rare kit. Take good care of them.

John

Too many great drums to list here!

Robyn64,

I working on an earlier version of the Camco strainer so I'm familiar with the parts you are showing in the pictures. I'm going to try to find Dolfan's video too. By broken, are you referring to the slender tube nut with the threads on each end? If so, notice that you have the same piece on both sides, withthe piece in place on one side and the other obviously out of place.

Is the problem that you cannot screw that piece back in? Unless the threads are stripped, the shorter of the two ends should screw back in using your fingers. Those two posts hold the strainer to the drum shell, which you probably recognize since the strainer was once on the drum.

If that is not the issue, please indicate a little more clearly what is wrong.

That is one beautiful kit, is a gold moire finish and is undoubtedly worth a significant amount. As Purdie says, get the missing lugs and hoops if you can afford them. The lugs show up fairly regularly on eBay. For the short haul, 12" diameter hoops that have 6 holes for the mounted tom and 14" diameter 8 hole hoops for the floor tom should do it (I'm assuming the sizes are 14x20 bass, 8x12 tom mounted on the bass and 14x14 floor tom with a 5x14 snare drum). The original style hoops are hard to find.

Best regards,

That's a very special kit you have there. Hang on to it for dear life, and as the others have suggested, get those missing pieces in place. All of those strainers eventually wear out, according to some. I've also read that you can use an Ayotte strainer without making any extra holes; that should do until you can find a replacement or get it fixed. If you do manage to get it fixed, I'd leave the strainer ON permanently, rather than risk it screwing up all over again.

Good luck.

yes i am refering to the tube nuts, the one that is out of place is broke off inside the nuthole. and the other is slightly stripped, it will tighten down but won't stay tight. and yes those sizes are correct. am keeping my eyes on ebay and there are some lugs there for sell that i got my eye on, just need the funds, only need lugs for the tom all others are still on drums. thanks for your post and your time dan, very appreciated.

ok guys, don't you worry none, i will NEVER sell these drums, when i am gone they go to my grandson jude. these were my aunt jamie's drums and just as i cherish her i cherish these drums.

the first photo i added was taken when i first got them. since i have added rims on the mounted tom and the floor tom. am having a hard time finding a 20" rim for the kick drum tho but do plan to put one on asap.

here is a newer photo of my drums: (and NO laughing at the homemade cymbal stand) lol.

oh and don't fret, that stand is not putting any pressure on the edge of the kick drum, it is not even touching it.

thank you everyone for your replies.

ok i found dolfan's post on how to repair the strainer but the photos he shows is not completely like mine.

here is mine:

the one he is showing has a cover over the round piece and is held on with screws, mine don't have that. mine is mounted to the drum with the lit'l tube nuts with washers and small nuts on the inside of drum.

now i am really confused. Help2
