now when strainer hub is in place it will be tightened from the inside of drum

now if only i could keep this tightened down and in place it works great

ok cup'l questions: do they still make those tubenuts and can the hub be drilled and tapped, if i can find tubenut a lit'l bigger and be able to dril n tap the hub all my worries would be gone and i could get back to makin' noise, D' Drummer

hope this helps explain things a lit'l better. thanks for your time guys.

ps got more photos if needed.

Robyn - Got your PM...

1. Replace the unit. They come up often enough on fleabay that you won't have to wait long to find one.

2. One of the members here recently published the name of a machinist that can reproduce hard to find drum parts. I can't recall 'who' made the posting. Hopefully, he'll read this and provide you with contact info for the guy. You can call and ask how much it would cost to have the part made that you need.

Hope this helps... if it was me, I'd just track a working original strainer down on the bay and be done with it.

John

PS - If you ever consider selling those, call me first. (Serious)

Too many great drums to list here!

thank you john, appreciate you taking time here buddy.

i do have my eye on that bay site (lol) have been watching for one every since i realized mine was broke, but haven't seen one like this pop up yet, hve only seen the one with the T bar which is completely different then these. bad thing about this is i can't play until i get this problem fixxed and am beginning to have withdrawels. this is the only set of drums i have. i'm about to do the super glue thing again, at least i can play for a lit'l while til the glue breaks loose again. lol.

and yes you will be the 1st one i call if i decide to sell but please don't hold your breath, coz these drums were given to me by my aunt and they got alot of sentimental value to me, main reason i still have them.

again thanks for your time john.

I'll keep my eyes open for one too, robyn. I -have- seen them on fleabay. They may not come up every week, but they do come up. There is one unscrupulous seller who is fond of parting out vintage drums. As much as I hate steering any business their way, one of their sales may produce the strainer you're looking for.

I'll pm you if I spot one anywhere. Try a local machinist for the threaded cylinder you need. It may not cost that much to make. Won't hurt to try.

John

PS - Don't poo-poo my offer too quickly. Sometime after the first of the year I'll be in a position to buy. I also have a late 50's Gretsch Round Badge kit I just re-wrapped that I would be willing to swap for Aunties drums! You'll still have a classic kit to knock around on.

Replacement Camco strainers (replacement Camco anything actually) tend to be expensive though......see earlier email on a Rogers strainer - they're more plentiful and at least you'll get it into a playable state. When you finally find a Camco strainer, the Rogers one will be easy to offload.

Nothing to add to your parts dilema but just want to say that is such a nice drum set... congrats to you and how neat to have such a cool family heirloom to pass down.

Not a Guru... just interested..

OK, now I know what you've got going on there. You have the throw side of a 701 Super w/ the wrong casing meaning you only have one halve of a mechanism that was designed for both halves! I don't currently have a 99 Super to double check but I'm fairly sure the 3 holes are vertical for that strainer. Somebody obviously modified this one to try and work as a single. The center post looks like a George Way. The bottom part of the post is definitely George Way as it should have the "T" part that you mentioned in your posts. Since your drum only has horizontal holes at the strainer end it's a bit confusing. Is this same hole configuration on the butt side? If so the original mechanism probably broke and it was converted. Also because of the configuration of the holes a standard Camco or Rogers will NOT work. Since finding a 701 Super would be next to impossible to find, you should try to find a George Way strainer with horizontal spacing. Make sure to check the actual spacing as George Way strainers came in different diameters throughout the GW era as well as having vertical spacing in the last two years of production.

Here are some pics of a 701 Super.

hey, thanks for taking a look steve. um no, it does not have the same hole configuration on the butt side, only two holes there, horizonal. there are no extra holes where the strainer goes or even on the but side. the only place on this drum where there is any extra holes is where the muffler goes. this strainer use to work real good when my aunt played them and it still worked good after i started playing them, played for about a month and i noticed the stainer getting loose so tried to tighten it up and that was when i seen the one post was broke so got the super glue out and got it to work again til the glue broke loose so glued it again, played about three weeks and it gave way again.

any way...do you know if they still make those lit'l screwnut things, maybe in a size bigger? i think i can drill n tap the case if i could just get some more of those lit'l screwnuts.

or do you knoe if a dw strainer would work?

i sure hope we can get this figured out. and hope all this will help someone else one day.

thanks for your time steve, greatly appreciated.
