As one who dabbles in woodturning..

Kudos to the guy.. that's one dangerous project..

But the chances of that "Shell"? not splitting within a short time are fairly remote IMO..

We have a self confessed Lunatic down here who turns huge logs.. his mobile lathe is powered by a V8..

A lampshade, seriously? After all that I was expecting to see a really cool drum. But I think it would be a cool way to make a drum if you could deal with the the shrinking and shape change as the wood dries.

Ok, this is really cool,

BUT

such drums would be incredibly costly. It took one huge log to create one drum through a painstakingly long and careful process. Also, it had to be dried in some really neat way so it wasn't cracked like those logs me and my dad store for our fireplace are.

I have no idea how this might sound or how thin you could actually make it before it became too fragile (I'm guessing not nearly as thin as conventional plywood drums), but I'm no expert in wood processing. Anyhow, it looks pretty darn cool and that man has some serious machinery.

Seems to me there would be a way to do this by banding the finished product and controlling the drying process carefully and slowly.And as far as waste-is it more wasteful than the woodstove?The drum could be substantially thicker,maybe 1/2" finished.Maybe the drum would need heads on it to control expansion-cracking.Maybe a conifer,like a fir or cedar which is sappy?

Glenn, I thought the same thing. A lathe is one thing I dont have. I know this video is a joke for making a drum but I have seen videos of guys doing some glue ups and then turning them. If I had a lathe you know I would try it.
