Hello everyone,

I am a "closet drummer" with an older 5 pc Ludwig set that I bought around 1994, but it was used so I wanted to see if I could get a better guesstimate for it's age. Not looking to sell cause I still get those delusions of grandeur and quite frankly it's one of my only outlets. It's got b/o badges, 8 lugs on the toms and way heavy duty. serial number 3051099. Recently I found EBay and well, I've found some decent cymbals and stuff, replaced the heads and now I'm feeling like a kid in a candy store. Ha Ha. Thanks again, and I look forward to hearing from you.- Paul

Sometime after '79, probably into 80-81 territory. Rules are rules, you must postJumping2

Thanks jonni. I can't find a chart on the net. Anyone have Ludwigs with a number close to 3051099 that knows the year they sold as new. Also, what is this series called? Thanks again.

Paul,

My 5 piece Luddy (6 ply) set is dated '79 and the s/n ranges are 223xxxx to 224xxxx. So, I would say your kit would most likely be '81 - '83. Ludwig changed to black & white (B&W) badges sometime after '84 . Not sure of the exact year. The vintage drum guide shows the '84 Ludwig catalog with B&O badges but the '88 catalog has both B&W and large Monroe keystone badges. So, that must me the year they move to NC.

Well, I had a set of 6 ply shells that I purchased from the original owner and the B/O badges were all in the same range of yours and he bought them right out of High School in 1981, so...

http://www.vintagedrumguide.com/serial_numbers.html

serial guide....and it is the best you will get, as it was compiled by one of our members.

What are the sizes? We can't even get close to telling you more without sizes, and pix speak volumes. It is one of the best ways to get more info.....

1) Early 8os 16x24#2110710, 13x14#2158419, 12x13#2211149

These were the serial numbers on my set.

The end of the B/O era, the numbers were as high as 34xxxxx from my understanding, but you will not get any closer than "sometime between 1980 and 84". No one knows the date cut-offs after '79 for sure. Some things that moght help in you quest is to look at the specifics of the kit itself. Is it a certain wrap, or configuration, what was the named catalog config, that sort of thing, what are the sizes? Mine were monster, pre-Rocker power toms and bass. Look at those things and you may start to get a better idea.

Yeah, that would be about right. Did you find the serial # guide? Also, what are the sizes? A 79 w/stamp, is it a 3 ply or 6 ply shell? The way to tell is a reinforing ring at each head, on that year, is the interior a "clear" or painted? If clear, it simply means they are lacquered inside, not painted, and if painted are more than likely 3 ply shells, but I think they discontinued the 3 ply shells in 76...?

Do you know how to post pix?

This set is a 6 ply. According to Jack Lawton, Ludwig expert, Ludwig began transitioning to the 6 plys in '73. I have a friend with a '76 set with 6 plys also.

So, as we said, nothing was ever standard at Ludwig.
