I remember my high school had a psy. red standard set, and a Rogers Dynasonic snare to go with it. It was a big influence on me. I wanted a drum set. I, of course was a freshmen playing the cornet and was not allowed to touch the drums. By the time I was a junior I had a double kick blue Vistalite and a sliver sparkle Club date 4 piece and had joined up with the local cool guys. I had to wait until I was a senior to get the Dynasonic. BTW, it's my #1 snare again after all those years.

I like the Standards because they're underdogs. Every bit as good as the regular Ludwigs but rarer and less known, so in a way, cooler.

Yes, I did of course go on to leave the HS band and teach myself. We would play the dances after football games (back when schools hired bands) and I would set up my stuff on the stage before changing for the games. The whole band including the drum line and arrogant band director had to walk right past 'em on their way out of the school to the field.

I had not thought about how motivating that mod orange Ludwig Standard set really was until reading this post today. Very enlightening.
