Big 10-4 on the dish soap soaking/cleaning all the plated parts. What I discovered is the Ajax brand dish soap seems to to do a more effective job disolving the rust.

For your delamiation issue, you can inject some wood glue under the separated plys and clamp it with some wood clamps and some 1x1 square dowels like I did on this one. I covered the dowels with foil so that they would not glue themselves to the shell. Afterwards I sanded the inside of the shell & the excess glue that I was not able to wipe-off before it dried, then sprayed a few of coats of clear shellack.

Sorry about that. The one wood dowell under the vise grips is actually a 1x2. There's also a couple pieces of 3/4" square tubing clamped in that pic that I used instead of wood.

To the guys recommending soaking in dish soap. Do you mean pure dish soap? or mixed with water?

I am right in the middle of restoring a snare and have all the lugs removed. Was going to use brasso but I am intrigued about pre soaking in dish soap.

Thanks!

Dish soap and water. Very rust parts can take a couple days but it works good!

I use it "straight-up" 100% out of the bottle. I let the parts soak for 2-3 days. Then clean em with warm water and a stiff nylon "tooth brush".

I found with my cleanup of a set of 65's that the best Rust Remover is simple Vinegar, buy a big bottle and let parts soak in it and the rust falls off like magic! I'll add some photos later.

+1 On the vinegar or the dish soap.I usually use Dawn. The rust just goes away.

You mentioned using steel wool in your first post.I would caution against it as it will scratch the chrome.Good luck with the restoration.FYI
