Hey gang, I'm sitting here at work not getting anything done because I can't stop thinking about this kit. Do you think these are skinny spurs are heavy spurs? Everyone knows how inconsistent Ludwig was back in the day, and in this case I'm wondering if it's outside the realm of possibility that they'd put 5/16" spurs on a 6-ply drum. They just don't look like 1/2" spurs to me.

These are the 5/16" "skinny" spurs, although Ludwig referred to them as 1/4"! And, yes, they did put these thinner spurs on a few of the kits with 6-ply shells. Here's a link to the "Classic" kit from the 1980 catalog, with 6-ply shells... http://vintagedrumguide.com/images/ludwig_sets/classic/1980_classic.jpg

Are you sure the kit in question has a 6-ply bass drum? If this is a matched kit, the toms have Keystone badges and would be 3-ply with rings. The bass drum is probably an early B/O badge, also with 3-ply shell.

They're not matched. The bass is a B/O and I'm pretty sure it's pointed, the serial number is 1785529. It could be in the 6-ply era from that number alone. I actually called the seller and had him look inside the vent and he said there are no reinforcement rings. I know that should be the end of the discussion... but I just can't shake the idea it's a 3-ply drum and he was mistaken. Maybe the rings didn't really jump out at him? I mean the spurs, the badge, the wrap, the Keystone toms...

I'm just so darn desperate for a 24" champagne sparkle!

If the price is right (negotiate) I'd pull the trigger on them. Sweet kit.

Just keep the faith a 24" will come along. This kit looks to be a nice one.

Maybe you should ask for pics of the inside of the bass drum. It looks like a pointed badge right? I'd be feeling the same way. Good luck. If you pass on these please along the info on them to me if you wouldn't mind. Good luck.

They are nice, right? All you have to add is some air-cusioned rubber feet to the floor and the bass drum, set them up and have at them. That little kit doesn't need a thing. Set-up and play. Because they are mismatched badge-wise, you have some ammo to cut a good deal. (Negotiating point.) I'd scoop them up and start shopping around for a champ sparkle J-Fest!

The Electric Company - If the B/O badge bothers you, it's a 1969 number which was a badge transition year. First half of year production with keystone badges, late year production had pointy B/O badges. If you want all the badges to match, wait for a 69' keystone badge to come up and swap it out with the B/O. As long as the keystone badge is from 69', you're legit!

I'm actually hoping for an all-B/O kit. I've got three B/O wing toms and right now I'm focusing on finding a B/O bass, just needs to be a 3 ply.
