Packing drums for shipping Last viewed: 2 hours ago

What is the best way to pack a 4 pc shellpack?

So far I took all the hardware off all the drums (not the badges of course) and tried putting everything into one box. I couldn't find a box big enough so I custom cut two boxes and I will tape them together. This box is 24x24x 30 inches high - big and bulky.

I'm wondering if I should put the hardware back on the drums and try packing the bass drum and floor tom in one box and the snare and rack tom in another?

Suggestions please from those of you that have done this with success.

Thanks,

Gary

Gary since you've already gone to the trouble of taking the drums apart, email your buyer and ask if they mind reassembling the drum or rather have you send them in two boxes nested together.?

Hi Gary, that box should work. I got my 4pc and all hardware in one box like yours.

the shells were nested inside each other. the bags of hardware was inside the nest and tucked in the corners of the box. start with the bass drum in box first, then the floor tom. the rack toms should fit inside the ft. once you get the shells in start filling the gaps between each shell with packing material. use heavy-duty storage ziptop bags for the lugs n smaller parts. the hoops will sit on the nested shells. just work with it a bit, it will all fit. Hope this helps.

Thanks! This is all good advice. I did ask the buyer if he doesn't mind two boxes. I'm paying the shipping however. I asked him if he'd mind paying the extra shipping - he doesn't want to do that. I'm guessing the shipping will be over $300 for two boxes and maybe even that with one so I'm on the hook for it. But, he hasn't paid me yet so if the shipping gets crazy pricewise I may not sell them. Our original deal was he pays for the drums & packing materials (materials to $25 - I've already spent over $50 on this) and I pay shipping to $300. So we'll see where this ends up.

I did nest the drums on a trial packup and it looks good. I have all the hardware packed in bubble wrap (all the lugs and small pieces in zip-loc bags and bubble wrapped....tons of bubble wrap and I have lots of peanuts in case I need them. Everyone loves peanuts;)

I have shipped several 13,16,22 kits just like these in the pictures. I usually take everything off of the bass drum and then nest the others inside with plenty of padding on everything. The big concern for me is not having any movement. Everything should be nice and tight with no chance of rubbing. This box usually weighs around 65 lbs and costs between $45.00 and $75.00 anywhere in the U.S.

Looks good Randy

I contacted the local UPS in Canada and it's going to be about $275 at 80lbs 24x24x27.5 or so. Mailing is expensive from Canada to the USA. I'm okay with it - I'm paying the shipping. The buyer lives in Finland but he will be travelling to the USA to pick the drums up.

I have lots of bubble wrap, cardboard separators and peanuts and will make sure there's nothing moving around in there.

Randy - That's the most pro-packing job I've seen and just the way I like to see them when they arrive. Great system. Next kit I sell (whenever,) will get the Randy-Packing-Treatment!

John

Too many great drums to list here!

Randy's looks great!

The bummer for me is adding in a snare......

I could never figure that out, so I do the snare and bass in one box with all the heads, and FT, hardware and ride in another.....

Chunky or creamy...... 'sall peanut butter.:):)
