Pearl President? kit advice. Last viewed: 1 minute ago

Loading...

So no way these shells get a wrap. Nice birch grain. Clear coat it will be. Crappy indoor pics. A bathtub soak of parts and rims from two Pearl kits and misc hardware.

Photo of the two toms included. The dark wood hacked 12" not sure if belongs. Slowly getting the old backing paper off the shells. The other 16" and 13" are orphans that came with Pearl hardware. Lessor grade. Sharp flea bit edges. Fixable. The lot should make for an entertaining various setup/tuneable kit.

Any suggestions welcome.

Thanks.

Thanks all !!

Have decided most likely a later kit that just had the Wood Fiberglass badge with splayed aluminum vent hole cover. Interesting few wraps available for the WF drums. A few Agates and Natural wood so doing that.

Don't see the COS coffin lug snare listed but the pics are hard to tell. Have not found a pic of another. Doubt it is very rare.

Had a grand time going through the bits, sorting out what kit it may be. Going to be awhile before put back in one piece. Swine work first...

Creighton,

Take a look at this page. It has a stupid amount of old Pearl catalogs on it. Lots in Japanese. Looks like they used the "President" name into the late 70s.

Wanted: Pearl President floor tom in Golden Grain wrap and rack tom in Tiger Eye (root beer) wrap.

I see you are neck high in Pearl with this project! "Swine work"! I really hate those lugs (unfortunately). Those shells indeed do look nice though. They appear to be quite thicker than a typical cheap Pearl (hence not 'cheap'). I have read many good things about thicker luan shells by both Pearl and Star (yes, read that these are fiberglass/wood). I see you have the some birch outer ply, yes should turn out nice if you can get them cleaned up enough.

Of all the COS MIJ snare shells, that one there typically does sound good. I have/had many of those and indeed like mine much. Those coffin lugs are really cool! I would suggest keeping that (or instilling drumlove into your local youngin' that will get these). I hope to instill appreciation of these old MIJs into my son when the time is right. He is 9 so soon he will be outgrowing his child set. I have a Star made Red Onyx that he will get when he is big enough for it. I need to get it slapped together soon so I can enjoy it for a while before I have to give it up!

Indeed keep us updated on the progress of this project. No need to post as you go, but don't forget to take pics along the way even 2 or 3 shots can make the restore story so much better :)

I had a great day! Instead of sleeping in and wasting the day, I got up at 8 and I had all my slacking done by noon!

Excellent link!!

I don't mind the lugs. Style fits the era, chrome is good. Springs and inserts. Curious on this latest Pearl kit the springs have felt inside the springs. Took somebody some time and not sure what purpose was served. Tom lug mounting hole spacing same as Slingerland so options without drilling.

Snare is a keeper. Should be safe saying on this forum sounds better than my Slingerland 70's COS :-) Looking forward to getting it cleaned up. Like the lugs as well. More of a gemstone shape than coffin. I have yet to find another for sale. Anyone know fair market value?

10 year old nephew has been playing a Maxwin (Pearl) blue flash/white interior kit for a almost a year. Nothing has failed. Have your son help getting the Stars back in one piece. Will be fun times. The look will be priceless when by the way those are now yours.

Pics when can

Thanks all !!

As we go's...

14"x10" tom shell paper and glue removed. Hardware soaked and tumbled. Not polished or waxed yet. Wipe down with bleach and then "Scrubbing Bubbles" is slowly getting the gunk off the inner shell. Fiberglass is thin enough can see the inner ply grain.

Thinking just a very light stain to bring the grain out and then a few clear coats and be done.

>> Just noticed put a lug on upside down. Oops... Already off the drum.
