Picked up a Ludwig Standard Kit Today Last viewed: 45 seconds ago

I've read that Ludwig's Classic lugs fit on Standards without any modification to the factory-drilled holes. Thinking ahead for a second here, I was wondering whether it would make sense to make that switch sometime down the road? Other than for cosmetic purposes, would there be any reason to do so? I imagine that it wouldn't affect the sound in any way. Do the original Standard lugs and hardware hold up sufficiently for a "player's" kit? Any words of wisdom would be greatly appreciated.

They'll be fine. They were just simpler and cheaper to manufacture. The tom mount's usually the weak spot on old Luddies. If it's weak, a new Gibalter'll fit the base plate and hold position well. "Beater Kit"? Hardly! It's the same 3 ply shells as a Classic, in cooler colors. I'm predicting a real rise in value on them. Starting to see hip insiders using them. Blair Sinta comes to mind......

Gary - that is gorgeous! What sizes? One quite like it up in the Flint area for 250. BTW - seam on the inlay is on top and visible.

I had a great day! Instead of sleeping in and wasting the day, I got up at 8 and I had all my slacking done by noon!

fishwaltz - Minimal to no fade on the wrap on any of the drums. they all cleaned up quite nicely. The only Avocado Strata kits I've seen lately were either missing the respective floor toms, were in terrible condition or were priced significantly beyond my budget.

tnsquint & Ircollura - Appreciate the kind words.

crash - Thanks for the information you provided and your input on the kit.

Drummerjohn333 - Sizes are 22/12/13/16 with the matching chrome snare. I noticed the one in Flint. It's missing a significant amount of hardware and the seam on the floor tom is lifting. I still need to add the bottom rim on my FT. Good catch regarding the in-lay. I missed it with my one good eye.

I picked up what I believe is a Ludwig Standard S-330 kit earlier today. I got it for what I believe was a more than reasonable price and the prior owner threw in two A. Zildjian cymbals (18" & 20"), two A. Zildjian 14" hi-hat cymbals, the original Ludwig Standard hi-hat stand, the original Ludwig Standard bass drum pedal, the original Ludwig snare stand, two original Ludwig Standard flat base cymbal stands and a throne. I realize that they look pretty filthy in the attached pic but I'm looking forward to giving them a good cleaning and polish. All the drums have very close serial numbers in the 18XXX range. Hopefully, the set will serve as a pretty good "beater" kit.

Good score on the Standard kit. I have a Blue Strata Standard kit with an Acrolite snare. I just looked inside my 12" tom and it shows May 1969 and the serial number is 18473.

That is an awesome kit. In my opinion, this finish is the perfect mix between the wilder finishes offered in the Standard line and a classic vintage look. And as far as condition, I'd say you brought them back way beyond your hopes for a "beater" kit. Enjoy those beauties!

The cleaned up pics look great! I really go towards "unique" finishes. And, they're 3 ply Luddies. Doesn't get much better then that! Like them a lot....Here's the two I'm gigging currently.
