Well.... it was a good day. I just joined the COB pre-serial club today. Found a nice 5x14 at the local Guitar Center for 200-, miss marked as a 70's supra... I knew something was up as soon as I picked it up... damn heavy! Round muffler knob, crimped beds, brass hoops. Ludwig stamped throw and butt plate, no date stamp. Its already apart for cleaning... I'll post photos when its done. Cant wait to play it.

Very cool! I know there is one in the Fountain Valley GC for $800, obviously not mismarked.;)

Congrats on the drum nash.

BTW, Mine is all apart, shell polished, couple of very minor dings tapped out. The butt plate holes were actually drilled slightly crooked from the factory, so I slightly elongated the holes on the butt plate itself (no, not the shell). Can't see it behind the washers. Just need to polish the lugs and she'll be ready to go.

Man, it would be nice to score a couple of NOS Ludwig heads for it. I'm not quite sure why, but those early Ludwig factory plastic heads sound better on metal Ludwig drum shells than just about anything else you can throw on it. Weird, but true.

Can't wait to hear your review...

John

Too many great drums to list here!

The NOS heads would definitely be cool. I've got a gig Sunday, so I will definitely put it through its paces.;)

Nice, cant wait to hear your opinions on the drum. I also like the sound of thin heads on the early drums Some of the modern heads seem to have too much coating.

Here is a link to an in-depth article on the early Super's... you may have seen it, but here it is for others. I keep it on hand for info. (a bit more in depth than the Ludwig Book)

Welcome to the pre serial cob snare drum club nashdrum. I just got mine before xmas along with a pre serial super classic kit for 350/400$ my invested trade. I found out very fast what makes these snare drum so special. If anyone is looking to get one now is the time, there are still some great deals to be found out there, get one before the economy takes a turn for the better, cause by then we will all be stuck paying big bucks for one.

I got mine at a yard sale about ten years ago. Came with a WFL 3 piece kit and a set of 13" Zildjian hats, and 20" ride. Paid $25 for the lot. Needless to say, it's been my best yard sale score to date, and the drum has served me well.

Hey nash,

Thanks for that link, it is very informative. So, according to the article, I have an early Super model, since it has the WFL P83 and butt.

Got it all together and tuned, and WOW, very impressed. The only thing that I didn't put back to original was the wires, I used some Puresound 20's. The drum is fat, with a nice honk to it, no annoying overtones that some brass snares tend to have. I love that this drum sounds totally different from my 402, and Blaemire snares, which are all great drums. My longtime quest in finding a COB is now over. Yes Sir
