Set a reserve price that includes what you need for everything involved in the sale....and then list the item with "free" shipping.

I do a lot of business on eBay, both as buyer and seller. As a seller, I've found it's much quicker to get paid using the flat rate shipping method. Most of the time I get paid right after the auction is over. I try to be fair with my shipping amounts, and to be honest sometimes I do make a little more when the shipping in less than what I charged. But at the same time, I have also lost my tail (for example, I once sold a bass drum for about $140 with a shipping amount of $60. Turns out the shipping was $140!) so I figure you win some and you lose some. It all about washes out in the end.

I have a FedEx account, so as a buyer if I see a shipping amount that I think to be too high, I just ask the seller if they are okay with putting it on my account. This means that I pay exactly what the shipping is and nothing more. Lately people seem to have been okay with that. Or, I can always send a call tag. The only thing the seller is responsible for then is boxing the item up. It costs me $8 per box, but sometimes that extra fee is still cheaper than their original amount.
