I recently made a barter for a WFL snare. I thought it was a '59 so I assumed it would match my '65 Luds fairly well. Upon looking closer at the time line of WFL products, it appears as though I may have a late '40's early '50's snare. I'll try to post a picture of the badge for all of you super intelligent drum fellas out there. It appears to be all mohagany with some tall re-rings (also mohagany). From a rough estimate it's around 6.5 - 7" deep. The one rim I have (throw, lugs, and top hoop coming soon) were "quoted" as being brass. Help me out peoples. Let me know if I got a good deal or it's not worth messing with. Lol.
Questionable WFL Snare Last viewed: 1 hour ago
Oops. It wont let me load a picture from my phone. I'll get it up tomorrow. :)
Finally got the pictures! I checked an Acrolite strainer (standard 2.5 inch, I think) and the holes on the shell were further apart. Hoop is brass. It was NOT drilled for a muffler (weird).
Any help on dating would be great.
Reinforcing rings are maple. The lug casings on it were bowties. I can't tell how many lug casings it had on it from the picture, 6 or 8. I prefer 8-lug models, so if it were drilled for 8, I would find it worthwhile to pursue restoring. Some people enjoy 6-lug models, especially with deeper snares, because of the "open" sound they produce. Either way, you've got yourself a great shell to work with, provided it's structurally sound.

most of those had no mufflers. check the badge section here on the forum to see what you have. my old eyes cant tell from the pic. youre gonna love this drum. same 3 ply as your 65's. will sound great together.

In no way questioning you VM2K, you probably have forgotten more about drums than I managed to accumulate. But, my 1948-1952 WFLs have no mufflers. Maybe they built them without mufflers by default, and the addition of the muffler was an option.
Good to see you posting Mike!
That looks to be a 48-52 badge from the picture. It also looks like it had 6 bowtie lugs, so they would have called that the Supreme Concert snare at the time (later the Pioneer). I had one recently, it was nickel hardware and had no muffler. It was a great sounding snare, it sold for about $250 on ebay. Here is the thread about it:
my 48-52 6 lug supreme concert model also has no muffler.

This is an 8-lug model. The bowtie lugs were at the shop I got it from but misplaced at the time. I get to go back tomorrow to pick them up. :) Is there a modern Ludwig strainer that would fit this?
8 lug? Even better! That was called a contest model concert drum. I'm not sure on the strainer fit, maybe a p83? Someone on here will either know of or have something that works.
