"If you're not breaking sticks you're not doing it right!" Last viewed: 0 seconds ago

From geckobeats

I have noticed that the extreme drummers such as George Kolias et al play quit lightly due to the ridiculous blast beats they throw out. They just could not play that fast at that high a velocity.

I agree completely. You can't play as hard as possible and play as fast as possible. I just meant it's difficult to play super soft and play really fast. Not speed metal fast but fast.

Dumb and dumber!!!! What the freak? Anyone able to tell what type of cymbal or drum that was? The both have to have some value. Just don't get it.

I worked with a young worship leader like that once. He had average playing skills on several instruments, and honestly didn't realize what he didn't know. I fixed up the church's drum kit and he trashed it.

You should see what he did to a set of Hot Rods. It was like a busy beaver had brunch in the drummer's booth. Amazing. Dowel fragments were everywhere.

Needless to say, I'm playing at a different church these days. I didn't get bitter; I just shook my head and moved on to a better opportunity.

See what happens when kids don't have to save their own money to buy nice things? Unbelievable.

Ah yes I see. As Gerald was saying, you need good technique and lots of practice to get to a point where you can play with burning intensity at any dynamic level.

Only a few of us realise the power lies in the feel we put out, not always the volume.

That cymbal looks to me like a Zidjian A. Maybe 18". They're not cheap! And I happen to like Zildjian A's!!!!!!! It did not impress me at all.

Without being judgmental here, there is no question that there are incorrect ways of playing which will result in more damage to your instrument. And there are ways of playing, holding sticks, striking cymbals and heads, angle of cymbals and heads, etc. which minimize damage to all of the above. In addition, to play extremely fast you can't help but strike harder, but drummers who have great control can play extremely fast without completely destroying sticks and heads. And if it's volume you're looking for then mic your drums. If you're going through cymbals, heads, and sticks, regularly, like weekly/monthly then maybe there's something you can learn about technique to help.

LOL but you are being judgmental you did not say anything about the players I mentioned you just went all tech on me and there lies the problem there is no right or wrong every one plays different if someone just busts up their stuff each time they play they will get another job... but seems you are missing my point.... styles play a huge role in how one plays and I would much rather play like my heart feels then try and play different because someone tells me i am holding the stick wrong or, have my heads to tight or striking at the wrong angle what utter B.S. guys, gals it is music it comes from your inner self let go of all the mind trash and just play, if you break a few things so what, if you do not break anything ever so what!

This is how we have the Ginger bakers, John Bonhams, Buddy Rich's of the world they were unique because they dared to be themselves.... and we must love what they have done as we still listen to them...

I completely agree with you on that. We are not robots that approach, tune, set up, and play the drums identically. That is what sets us apart.

And you've made me feel better again for being a stick and cymbal breaker! I started to get a bit worried then.
