Rail Mount or No Rail Mount? Last viewed: 26 minutes ago

I'm cleaning up a '65 bass drum that I just picked up for my kit. It's a 22" and I'm going switch the 20" I have with the new one. It has a rail mount on it but I'm not going to mount my tom on the bass drum, I'm going to mount the tom on a cymbal stand.

The question I have is that the rail mount leaves four holes in the base drum and it will look bad to have the holes. Seems like I only have two options. 1) put the rail mount on without the tom pieces or 2) fill the holes with bolts.

This is a players kit so I'm not concerned about originality, what would you do, have the chrome rail show or fill the holes with bolts?

I'd probably leave the rail in place, minus the upright arm. Either way though, four chrome plated carriage head bolts don't look bad and only other drummers will ever know they aren't supposed to be there.

You could also leave the rail and L arm intact and use it for a cowbell.

I don't like the bass mount. On a stand I can position the tom much better.

Rail mounts on sets seem to command more money... even on players...You may not care about the originality, but if and when you go to sell it, having the rail in place might make for a more attractive set for the next person.
