Sound wise/tuning range... there is a difference between the two... from my reading most jazz drummers during the 1960s Blue Note era preferred the 6-ply RB shell over the 3-ply RB shell.

Reading Rob Cook's book? If so, that's Lee Ruff's opinion. He also doubts, based on the ones he has seen, that the 3-ply BDs are legit Gretsch. As for the sound/tuning differences, you're correct that there are some and should be expected given their construction. I've got both 6-ply and 3-ply w/rings Gretsch 18" BDs and have actually experimented with getting identical sounds from both. You can't duplicate the 6-ply sound with the 3-ply BD and vice versa.
