Rebuilding a speed king worth doing? Last viewed: 4 minutes ago

You are so right Johnl. Definitely don't want to take away from Bill. He's here for people that don't have the time to do it themselves.

I have done a few dozen myself. I give the foot board the buff treatment to make them shine like a mirror.

Thats where I am at, finding the time. I have had some shells sitting here for several months waiting for veneer, cant seem to get to them.

Thank you!

I refurbished a old WFL Speed king and that old grease is awful. Unscrewing the screws at the bottom of the post is easy. Just hope those pistons fall out. You can usually get them out with some needle nose pliers. You can pop those end caps off with a rubber hammer or put a cloth around the post and hit it just below the caps. May take a few whacks but they will pop off. I just cleaned all the gunk out and removed the bearings, springs, and pistons, and soaked them in dawn and warm water. I didn't put thick oil back in there, just lubricated the bearings, springs, and pistons with Hoppes 9 Lubricating oil and the pedal works great.

Completely agree some just don't have the time, skill, tools or space to do it. Bill does a great job and worth every penny. Got a WFL waiting in the wings for a complete overhaul right after I finish my roto tom project, snare project and the violin display case. Never enough hours in the day :)

once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.

That's really not a bad idea. Slingerland had a better hinge on the foot board.
