once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.
Never properly met him, but my band opened for TheBand at The Chance in Poughkeepsie, NY in 1994. They walked past us on the way down the stairs to the stage and said a very professional "Nice set, guys!" to us. That was awesome, and part of what I'll always remember about Levon and Rick now that they're no longer with us. Listening to them warm up before the show in a small room, with Levon on mandolin, was another highlight.
Man, this has been a bad week.

His contributon to Band will remain forever
Sad news...May He Rest in Peace.

I pulled into Nazareth, I was feelin' about half past dead;
I just need some place where I can lay my head.
"Hey, mister, can you tell me where a man might find a bed?"
He just grinned and shook my hand, and "No!", was all he said.
Take a load off Annie, take a load for free;
Take a load off Annie, And (and) (and) you can put the load right on me.
I picked up my bag, I went lookin' for a place to hide;
When I saw Carmen and the Devil walkin' side by side.
I said, "Hey, Carmen, come on, let's go downtown."
She said, "I gotta go, but m'friend can stick around."
Go down, Miss Moses, there's nothin' you can say
It's just ol' Luke, and Luke's waitin' on the Judgement Day.
"Well, Luke, my friend, what about young Anna Lee?"
He said, "Do me a favor, son, woncha stay an' keep Anna Lee company?"
Crazy Chester followed me, and he caught me in the fog.
He said, "I will fix your rags, if you'll take Jack, my dog."
I said, "Wait a minute, Chester, you know I'm a peaceful man."
He said, "That's okay, boy, won't you feed him when you can."
Catch a Cannonball, now, t'take me down the line
My bag is sinkin' low and I do believe it's time.
To get back to Miss Annie, you know she's the only one.
Who sent me here with her regards for everyone.

Couldn't have said it better!
He IS a LEGEND!!!
I'm too saddened by this news to comment much. The fact that I always wanted to build a Levon-style kit for myself (and I did!) speaks clearly for how much I have always admired the man. Levon had it all. Class, talent and style.
John
He was a great musician and a humble social activist. I regret never going to a Midnite Ramble. My home (upstate NY) has been greatly enriched over the decades by Levon. Thanks!!!!!!!!!
