Rogers Big R Dynasonic + Skyntone? Last viewed: 0 seconds ago

Loading...

I just bought myself a rather nice Dynasonic (5x14) from 1977, according to the serial nr. I've never had (nor played) a Dyna before, but have come to like Skyntone heads, so I would be very interested in hearing your thoughts about Dynas and Skyntones. My style of choice for this drum would be jazz.

Also, I believe that all Dynasonics are COB. Is that correct?

Finally, I am thinking of taking the drum apart and cleaning it completely. It's a bit dirty now, but it looks like it could come out really great after a clean-up. Is it advisable to remove and disassemble the strainer and clean and lube it too? Any directions as to how to do that? Or is it rather self-explanatory? Also, should I remove and clean out the lugs too?

I am looking forward to your thoughts on this.

Hey Magnus.

I believe that maybe the latest Dyna's may not of been COB as the accountants moved in, and the quality moved out. Ploughman could tell you for sure.

All USA Dyna-Sonic metal snare drums are Chrome over Brass. From the initial 280 or so Gretsch straight sided First Generation drums of 1961 through to the last Big R in the D100,000 serial number range of 1983/early 84.

I have not used a Skyntone on anything. I do know of an orchestra player who used a gut frame and calf heads on a 1968 6.5" Dyna-Sonic.

Do disassemble for cleaning. It will come out much better.

Post a pic and number, I can give you a year.

Thanks geckobeats and The Ploughman,

Here is a pic of the serial no, D737954. If I didn't misread your excellent Dating Guide, it should be from 1977.

Good to know that it is COB.

Thanks for verifying that, The Ploughman.

Anything I should know before disassembling the drum? I read somewhere that the lugs can be complicated. Is that true? If so, please explain.

Anything I should know about the strainer? Is it as simple and self-explanatory as a Ludwig P85?

Also, two or three coils of the snares have come loose "in a chunk" from the metal base plate. I assume I can just glue them back down using epoxy and I will be fine.

Best,

Magnus

Use a hand screw driver or nut driver on the fasteners. No power screwdriver or battery power tools. Slow down you will get more done.

Yes on the epoxy, although it can be a pain. Puresound Vintage Series makes wires for the Rogers Dyna-Sonic.

The throw off will be self explanatory. ............. Loosen the throw off and the face plate eventually will come off. Then you can get to the internals.

Fasteners on your lugs are self tapping machine screws. There could be spall residue on the screw threads and spall fall off left in the lug boss. when you clean it all up, make sure you get any buildup off the individual fasteners.

Hey Ploughman!

Just learned something new reading your post..."spall". My first thought was "what the heck is he talking about"! Googled "spall" and it brought me right to Wikepedia. It was actually what I thought it might be. I love learning new things! Thanks!

Thanks again, Ploughman, for your excellent and kind help in this Dynasonic matter. I will do as advised and report back when done, with pics etc.

I will start with epoxying back the broken-off bit of the wires.

All the best,

Magnus

OK, so after disassembling and Dawn bathing the drum in its constituent parts, I've now reassembled it and put on new heads. Fixing the snare wires was easy, and the repair is almost invisible.

I haven't had time yet to tune the drum properly, but sure am looking forward to doing so.

Here are some pics after the cleaning. It looks really nice, methinks...
