Rogers question Last viewed: 5 hours ago

I'm in the market for a Rogers kit. Is this a steal?

http://www.guitarcenter.com/Rogers-Vintage-1960s-Rogers-Holiday-3-Piece-Blue-Onyx-Drum-Kit-110124148-i3759698.gc

What should I be looking for? They seem priced all over the place; anywhere from $600 to $3000. Sometimes it's obvious as to why the prices are so different, but usually it is not. I don't know much about the Rogers history, but I heard a couple kits last week and cried a little at the sound. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!

The devil is in the details. Might be an okay price but a lot depends on condition and tags. Does it have all original hardware? Extra holes? Cracks in the pearl? Sizes? Etc....

There are a lot of nice kits out there to be had for a decent price. Be patient and don't settle for drums for which you have to make excuses.

BTW... Where are you located?

That was the kit I bought and returned. Here is what guitar center won't tell you but I will:

1. Both rack and floor tom missing tone controls

2. Drum hoops are plastic and not wood - not original

3. Severe cracking of drum wrap on the floor tom

Yes it has all tags but the drums are mixed flat grey and speckled grey. I owned it for 24 hours and returned it. I bought a much nicer kit for the same price. It is located locally as when I returned it to Guitar Center they just kept it in the Raleigh store.

The only issue I can see is the tom mount on the bass drum. It's in an odd place for a single, my guess is that it was probably originaly a double tom mount but the hole pattern is the some so it's not a big deal. If the kit is in as good shape as it looks than it's a good deal.

Put a cymbal rod in that Swivomatic in the middle of the front end of the drum. Then, install another Swivo mount for the tom in the usual drummer's left of center (for a righty player). If the installation of the tom mount is done with no wood blow-out, there will be zero negative impact on resale. Rogers lovers love them so much largely because of the versatility of Swivo and Knobby mount applications.

No matter how far you push the envelope, it is still stationery.

Easier still is to put a double tom mount back on and a cymbal rod on the right side as shown in the photo. Two birds with one stone. Clapping Happy2 That is a bit dependent on the age of that set. If it had a Londoner mount, that will work. If it had the earlier top hat double mount, you'd have to enlarge a hole.

With free shipping on that blue kit though, it's not a bad deal. For a few bucks more you can probably find the same kit with the mounts in the location LeedyBDP is suggesting. Check this one on Craigslist for example if you're in the San Fran area. It's a lot about colors and blue is one of the generally least expensive ones because a lot of blue kits were made.

Ok, great info. Thanks all! I'd honestly rather not mess with adding hardware, drilling holes, etc.

I want a players kit in decent condition that I can tour with and resell no prob down the road if need be. That red one looks nice! I've seen those for upwards of $2000. The Rogers market seems very inconsistent for some reason.

I agree that Rogers is a crazy market. I bought my kit last year for $900. Threw it up on ebay and best offer was only $600. Traded it in for a Camco snare and Bob sold it for $895 without cymbal arm.

On that guitar center kit I would ONLY buy it if they lowered the price to account for the issues. Myself I would not pay more than $600 for that kit.

Value depends on a few factors.

Condition, all original or not, the era, finish, and sizes. Biggest bucks tend to go for Script badge era. Biggest bucks tend to go for the sizes of 20, 12, 14 and 18, 12, 14. The 14 floor is a big deal.
