shaving down sticks Last viewed: 2 hours ago

I know this sounds cheap - just really broke right now and don't like the feel of the sticks that I happen to have around.

Anyone ever shave down the neck of a pair of sticks? Ideally this would be on a lathe of some sort - or just a potato peeler (J/K)......

I have some nylon tipped stick in good condition - but they feel a bit too top heavy (end with the tip is too fat/heavy). I would like to shave a neck down and I am wondering if it would work. I have good Regal Tips that I usually use for reference...but about to run out of those - they occasionally break on me and been a while since I could afford more. You get the idea.....

Where in Michigan are you, John, and what's your usual stick? I move between Vic Firth 5b's and 7a's. Both nylon. I wouldn't try to alter the sticks. They are generally made using a centerless process, under water. For you to get them even would be a real trick. They MIGHT be sandable but... Let me know what you use.

I know what you mean with the cost of good sticks and i shop the local music store bargain bins and check out the grains, straightness, sizes, etc. and if you know what to look for you can get it cheap and lasts as long as the full on price stuff.Just make sure the grains are straight with as few arrowheads in the grain as possible.Just an idea...

Thanks for contributing to the conversation guys.

Yeah - I realized that the ones I was going to shave down wouldn't work anyway - as they are to thin. These are Sound Percussion 5AN - proving to be real good quality sticks - but are thinner than my 5A Regal Tips that I prefer and can not afford at the moment. Strange - the thinner SPs are heavier in weight and top-feel than the RTs. I wonder if they are different species of wood?

I am in Stockbridge, MI. I will not be trying this anytime soon it looks like - though I have enough sticks laying around that I could afford to try it on something. I just really like the feel of the RTs - that glossy finish on them and the weight of the stick and nature of the tip - make everything sound real good (we all know I am referring to our beloved Rides!)

So, a straight 5A, not the 5A "rock"?

I don't play wood tip - deprives us all of so much more brightness and beauty that Nylon provides. Yeah - would not even bother with such a good deal like that - know it sounds picky....yeah - I have picky ears I guess!

Wow! What a deal! Thanks for the heads up. I just bought 10 pair of 5a's $9.99 + FREE shipping! Can't beat that deal with a stick! BTW, they had a 10 pair for $14.99 offer on 5a Nylon tips! Go for it, John.

Thanks again, Rich.

Too many great drums to list here!

I figured I should post this in this thread after years of being tired of sticks being chewed up and breaking...

Pictured, is a pair of brass/aluminum sticks that a buddy of mine turned on a lathe for me...They are cloned from a Promark 747 Rock, American Hickory wood tip stick...I will never have to replace any sticks again, LOL!! I might have to replace skins and cymbals, but, no more sticks!!

Seriously though, these will be displayed on my wall in a custom wood cabinet...

I thought I`d share this...

Cheers

Shave the neck down? How about locking the butt end in a drill and clamping the drill in a vise. Homemade lathe! Then just put some sandpaper to the neck. You'll be surprised what a thinner neck will feel like for softer playing. I just started playing with these Vic Firth Charlie Benante's. You can't bang out hard rock with them, but they feel amazing and are great for concert and orchestral work.
