My Vote is no! Sell it to someone who needs it to complete their setup. Destroying an already rare tom by drilling it is bad enough, but to remove the existing wrap that is still in great condition is even worse. And yes it is rare tom because of the wrap! What is wrong with solid black hoops? Or chrome inlays? Do you really want matching inlays that bad?
Should I Or Shouldn't I Sacrifice My Extra Avocado Tom For Inlay Strips? VOTE PLEASE! Last viewed: 1 second ago
Do you know any good artists? Maybe someone could replicate your avocodo wrap on to the hoop inlay? Either paint it right on the hoops or perhaps start with a strata wrap (white?) and try to replicate from there?? I dunno just thinking out loud here. I don't think I'd take the wrap off the drum. Like some said there's a chance removal could take a bad turn and ruin it. Plus it looks like it in really nice shape despite the extra holes. ;)
Not a guru just havin fun with some old dusty drums.

I would go chrome or a nice shiny black inlay strip. Also a possible move is to pick out the most dominent colour within the scheme and try to get a match to that. OR just shelve the current hoops and get some solid wood hoops, that can look quite cool.
Otherwise I would not, absolutely not tear apart that 12" tom, either sell it, or keep it for recording in case it happens to speak better than the 13" in a given situation.
Cheers.

I agree with Craig. I think the hoops will look fine with a fresh coat of paint and no strips.
My vote is NO don't destroy the 12".
You might want to consider trying to make them. If there is ever a possible case to MAKE some wrap, it is in the case of a thin strip - BD inlays. Some printing involved, could easily be given a clear coat to shine, either with lacquer or even with a layer of thicker mailing tape.
I am going to try to do so with some grey shimmer hoops.

Ineteresting conversation as I seem to be having versions of this same debate internally every time I see an Oyster Blue Pearl Wrap on ebay or CL. So far I have always managed to talk myself out of buying whatever it is I am looking at to sacrifice for my bass strips.
That said if I actually had the drum in hand it would be an even harder decision.
But here is my thought on this particular situation for what it's worth. Since the strips would have to be made in three pieces, it would STILL not be correct. It would not be visible in most cases but you will always know it is not. To me that would be not much of an improvement over the current state and thus not worth destroying another drum.
While my opinion falls on that side, it does only just. In the end it depends on your personal feelings about it. Even if you go the other way you aren't destroying a pristine tom.
I too am looking for a 12" tom for my kit and I would not purchase one with three extra holes in it.

Nah, they aren't rare... shoot, I have a whole kit, an extra floor tom and an extra wood snare in Avocado Strata. I see 'em all the time, in their bags! Eye Ball
What is rare is the bass drum hoops!
Okay, shutting up now.
Ludwig standards aren't the holy grail nor is this wrap. This is a drum. Sacrifice it. Then do somethig with the shell. Or give it to BillnVick to use :)
My vote is to call JAck Lawton and see if he has a piece available. He has a pretty good stash, ya know.
