Slingerland Drums by Gibson Last viewed: 2 hours ago

About a month ago while doing some Slingerland research, I literally stumbled across a set of pages still on the Gibson web site. The pages aren't, that I could find, available from a link anywhere on Gibson's current site, but are old web pages that Gibson has either archived, forgotten about or both.

I wasn't aware that Slingerland had lasted into this century, or that Gibson had ever owned the brand. From a wiki entry I found that Gibson took the brand over in 1994 and ceased production sometime in 2003.

I saved all the html and associated files I could find, and have them as links clickable within a folder. This will allow you to view the files in your browser, just as if you were on the web site. If anyone is interested, PM me your email and I'd be happy to send them to you. The pictures aren't huge (remember - early days of the web) and neither are the files.

Were these drums any good or just more imported junk? The wiki states the drums were made in Arkansas.

This may be old news on the forum, and if it is, apologies. A forum search didn't turn up anything. Here's one of the photo's from the 'lost' web pages...

I should have added this: I couldn't find the link again or I would have added it, but if you want do a search on 'gibson slingerland', that might work.

I saved the files since someday, somebody at Gibson is going to clean up the old stuff on their website. When that happens, it's gone.

The Slingerland product line rights reside in the place known as Henry's grave yard. About ten years ago, I thought that organizing a group of investors to buy the rights to the name and all intellectual property associated with the brand name could be viable. I brainstormed about producing a line of mid 20th century replica drums. Then, I realized that it was already too late for the brand name to have any real marketable value. People like me and other people who love vintage Slingerland drums would not be interested in buying replicas of our favorite old drums. The drummers younger than age 40 would have about as much interest in a new Slingerland set as they would have for a new Studebaker car.

No matter how far you push the envelope, it is still stationery.

i don't have any real info for you other than i remember seeing these at the gibson booth when i worked the namm show back then.

they didn't really do much with the brand and for whatever reason let the brand fizzle out.

those 90's slingerlands are real hard to find. i rarely see then come up for sale. i wasn't really info vintage slingerlands but those 90's drums were great with a (then) modern look to them, like the 90's fibes.

the drummer from the mavericks played them (slammin' show. you can also see the whole show in 3 parts on yt) :

We (vintage drum lovers,) are just a segment of the drum market and a small one at that. It is mostly 'our generation' that keeps the vintage drum market active. As a group I think we buy more often than the average consumer, but it only accounts for a small portion of overall annual sales. Once we're passed on, this new generations 'vintage drums' are going to be C&C Customs, DW, Craviotto, etc. etc.

Slingerland, Rogers, Gretsch and Ludwig hold sway with us, but once we're gone...

John

Too many great drums to list here!

Fish!

I have a set of the Gibson/Tobias Slingerland's. They are a Buddy Rich set.. ( no surprise there! ) .. and they were compensation for my time doing consulting work for them back in 2004. The 2003 date is inaccurate. They were still doing business THROUGH 2005 at least. My set is Arkansas build, and the shells are pristine! My particular set was a "one of" as they built them using NOS 70's era Slingerland hardware. I'll attach a couple pics of them for all to see. I have gigged them.. ( as I had to! ) .. but truth be told, I'm going to be putting them up for sale... course that isn't the WHY behind this post though. I just wanted to chime in on the QUALITY of the build. They are top shelf! Main problem was:

BAD MARKETING and priced TOO HIGH.. plus .. no real dealer support from Gibson/Tobias. They are indeed, out of business. Long out of business actually. Here are a couple pics of mine. Oh, I almost forgot:

The snare drum is a CUSTOM BUILT Slingerland Radio King built with a solid shell, and again 70's era lugs with a three point/butt, and engraved Slingerland RK COB Stickchopper hoops. This drum is also one of a kind. It was at my request and also part of the compensation package.

John, I think that's about right to a degree. However , I have no doubt Slingerland, Rogers, Gretsch and Ludwig vintage drums will be used in the studio for generations to come.

Fishwaltz... Don't know if these interviews etc are included along with the catalog images that you located.. But there are a few interviews and other Gibson snippets of Slingerland mentions from around 2005.

They obviously overlooked deletion of all files and most of the links no longer work. But these can be viewed using "gibson.com features slingerland" with a Google search..

Here is one such Interview...
