Hey Fellas...saw this one come up on the Bay and I had to pounce. Did I just score an Artist model snare?

By the way...does anyone have a COB stick saver top hoop they would sell me?

Thanks,

Aaron

Is that wrap under the paint?

Great score. Very curious what is under the paint.

Don't know what's under the paint...but I'm hoping it's a single-ply shell. At $99.99 shipped, I took the chance. Even if I can't save the wrap, I have some blue sparkle wrap that I've been saving to build me a snare to match my '58 Luddys. The mystery begins...

Go slow and careful sorting out what is under the paint. Painted over wrap can be saved. Just comes down to what kinda paint and what wrap if any.

If it was mine I'd spend the money to have the paint tested then would be able to make a decision on how to get it off. Your drum and your call. Let us know how it goes.

Thanks!!

What would be the best method to take the paint off without damaging the wrap? Wet sanding? I'm most likely going to rewrap it anyway, but I need to find out what's underneath that paint!

That tone control looks 60's vintage to me.

The paint finish looks very good which makes me think that it's sprayed on, which means is either enamel or lacquer. I would strip the drum down and find a hidden spot (behind a lug, for example) and use a q-tip starting with mineral spirits and them progressing to alcohol and finally lacquer thinner to see what removes the paint and find out exactly what is underneath; although I think you'd be able to tell if it had a wrap just by removing a head and examining the edge.

The tone control looks 60's to me, too...and thanks for the advice. I will definitely be trying out this method. If you look at the 2nd picture I posted of the butt plate, it sure looks like that is the overlay of wrap...but as you mentioned, I should be able to tell as soon as I take off a head.

Snare should be here on Thursday and then investigation will begin!
