Snares to use on upcoming gig Last viewed: 11 minutes ago

Yeah I was thinking the A/K setup too. I do have multiple pairs of K and K custom hats, but I'm planning on good ol' new beats with the k custom dark ride...the k custom dark ride will actually be a new one in the line up...first gig for that ride. Looking forward to trying it out.

I can see the argument for the Elvin and Black Beauty snares...both versatile...truly awesome drums. No double bass kit, I don't own one, LOL.

No mic on this gig, isn't all that big of a place. It's a trio with guitar, bass, and drums. The set will range from Beatles, Clapton, Petty, Stevie Wonder, Marvin, Hendrix, and even a few tunes from Stone Temple, and others. It's a lengthy set and I have to learn a ton of music on the next few days, haha...

My vote is for the acrolite/bbStage Band2 and vintage A's.. keep it simple baby!

And to complicate things further, I have a vintage COB 5x14 supra. I'll flip a coin! LOL. I will say though that the metal snares seem more responsive at low volumes, as far as keeping that snare quality going...but wood or metal would work.

Play your set with the two you think you want. Play with the two you won't think will. Two will speak to you.

I was reading somewhere that shallow snares may be more appropriate for a smaller venue...not sure if any of you have some experience in this area. I'm leaning on taking the jazz festival and acrolite (both 5x14...I figure I can have both the Ringo and Al Jackson sound on the same gig, haha), and switching them out during the gig on certain tunes. We'll be playing a good number of Beatles tunes, and a bunch of other classic stuff including some R&B.

going on my experience with a shallow snare in a small venue, I wouldn't! I have a g.a.m / spizzichino copper piccolo, and used it at a small venue a couple of weeks ago. The sound engineer suggested swapping it for my pearl world series 6.5x14 because the piccolo was like a gunshot. I'm not the lightest of hitters to be fair, so depending on how you hit, you may be ok with a shallow snare.

Drums are loud....So play them LOUD!!!

I would argue that you could play quieter with a deeper drum (to a point). Piccolo snares can be deafening!!!!

Both valid points mentioned above here. I'll probably end up bringing one wood and one metal, trying both out during the night. Leaning on BB and the Elvin at this point. All great drums of course. I appreciate the feedback.

I would take whichever snare and cymbals are the loudest and has the best chance of shattering the windows in the joint! D' DrummerD' DrummerD' DrummerCool1LoLoLoLo
