Some Love For Ludwig Pre-Serial COB's Last viewed: 2 hours ago

Loading...

Hi All,

This one is mostly for COB owners/players, but hopefully everyone will enjoy it. I wrote a note to a friend of mine that I want to share. We were discussing COB's and the popularity of old Ludwig drums. I wrote:

I own some really nasty snare drums. Oaklawn Camco, vintage Slingy deep-dish bronze, hammered bronze Ludwig, 1940 Radio King etc. Drums that other drummers would kill for in terms of sound and playability. But even with all that very stiff the competition, my COB is the snare that sits behind my kit.

Nothing else I own, wood or metal, comes close. Those old pre-serial COB's are simply the best sounding snare drums ever made by anyone. I play every day. rehearse with the band once a week, and I get to gig/play out once a month to 6 weeks or so. Each and every time I (go-to) play the COB. The sound of that snare drum makes the little hairs stand up on the back of my neck. The rich sound of that drum can send little electrical flashes up my spine. It's a spiritually and physically joyful noise that it makes.

There is a reason why vintage Ludwig drums have the reputation that they enjoy among drummers. And a lot of that begins with the pre-serial COB's. Just the best snare there is. Show off yours! How long have you had it? What do -you- think of it? How do you rate it?

Looking forward to hearing your responses. As you can hear, I'm in deep monkey-love with mine.

John

Sweeeeet! Hey man, is that a baseball bat muffler on there? The shot is just a little fuzzy and it's hard to tell.

Nice one. Thanks for posting the photo. Love drum p0rn!

Well, I've only owned mine for less than a month, but the minute I had it tuned up, and struck it a few times, I knew that this snare would be going nowhere. I also own a '64/'65 Supersensitive (COB hoops) and a '79/'80 402, both having their unique voices and Ludwig mojo going on. But, my '59/'60 Super just has this fatness and musicality that the others don't have. I play alot of different genres of music, so the others will have stand time, but this COB will be coming to all the gigs, along with my trusty Blaemire (another story).;)

my claim to fame with snares would be my early 20's nob 5x14 8 lugger. john, this is the drum that i used the brass hoop clips on that i got from you in trade a while back. this snare drum blows all of my others away. this is as close as i can can relate to you all that have the cob supers...enjoy them!

Only COB's I have are Dynasonics, all 5 inch and a beauty of a 5 inch Sound Kind but I just came across a 6 x 14 Gene Krupa that is WOW!!!

I'd like to get a Ludwig COB Keystone, someday.

Mendozart - Yep, something unique about the sound of a COB. Until you're sitting over it and playing it, it's hard to appreciate what a pure quality sound comes out of the thing. Every little overtone is just perfect. Never a clinker or 'funky ring' in the sound anywhere. It is a truly 'musical' drum and every sound that comes out of it is a keeper.

Mikey - Sell three to get one of these! You'll be glad you did. COB is a drummer's dream snare. I can't believe the sounds I can pull out of this thing. I'll be playing and every once in awhile I have to look down at the drum to make sure that it's me playing and getting all those great sounds out of the drum. I swear it makes my drumming sound better.

BBK - See if you can swap or sell off one of the Dyna's and then treat yourself to one of these. I'll bet it moves to the top of the rotation quickly. Great drums.

I sold one of the Dynas, now down to three. I need another snare like I need another hole in my head. I'm actually trying, really I am, to thin out the herd. I have some resto work that I'd like to do on a couple of Leedy's and a 50's RK. Also looking to sell a couple of Rogers kits this year. After that, or if a great deal comes by, then yes I will get one.

Me too. I went to look at a transition badge COB a friend had for sale awhile ago. The snare beds were pretty deep and I couldnt get it tuned up the way I like. The snares had this annoying buzz that we could not get rid of, no matter what type of wires we used. I was pretty rushed since he is a busy guy so maybe I just didn't get enough time with it. At the time I couldnt figure out what all the hubub was about. This thread is making me realize I was a little hasty!
