That snare sure is Purdie! Sorry for the cheesy quip and forgive me for my ignorance. What does the COB stand for and are these drums easily found? I would like to hear one and add it to my small but growing arsenal. What kind of price would this drum sell for?

Around christmas time i got realy lucky on a trade. I picked up a 1962 4 pc pre serial kit 22" 16" 13" with the cob snare with a spare 13" pop tom. John the next time you see this snare it will be in the condition that it deserves , and it i will remain in my collection never to be sold or traded. This snare will be one of the best sounding snare i will ever own. As soon as i get my but plate i will start the work , then i will play it with great pride. And if you think the snare is in bad cond the rest of the kit is far worst condition but i'm up for the challenge it's worth it to me.

COB = Chrome Over Brass. No, they are not easily found and generally, depending on condition start somewhere in the $600 range.
Blaemire / Jenkins-Martin drums.

It'll clean up to be a real stunner! You need to get a P-83 strainer and butt plate for it. Man, wait until you lay into that thing, the boner it'll give you will make you feel like a teen-ager again! lol

I've played on one, and my opinion was, "That's a nice snare, but not $600 nice..."

caddy - COB's are not everybody's cup of tea I'm sure. It's mostly that I grew up with -that- sound in my ears. To me, a COB sounds the way a snare drum is supposed to sound. Brass can be a little clangy for some, but I like it. It's like feedback from an amplified guitar, if you know how to use it, control it, it adds to the music.

especially with a bunch of 32nds being played
66/67 downbeat with canister
Super 400 small round knob
1967 super classic obp
once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.

That's true. I just didn't like the pre-serial COB's particular take on the snare sound. I messed around with the tuning and snare tension a bit and just didn't find a sound agreeable to my ears. I have a Rogers Powertone and Ludwig Black Beauty that I love, but I just wasn't digging the Super for whatever reason that day. Maybe I'll come across another one in the future and fall in love with it. Kiss

I've been immersed in clave' rhythms for months now. 3/2, 2/3 grooves, mostly New Orleans second-line stuff, lots of snare and bass. A lot of licks incorporate buzz rolls, or notes that are buzzed for effect as you play them. The brass COB just gives me back all the right tones/overtones and articulation that I'm listening for in my playing. For me, it just may be a case of the right drum at the right time. Don't get me wrong, I play a heap of other stuff, from jazz to big-bop-boom Blues, the drum does it all with ease and excellence. I'm just digging it to death.
I wanted to hear other drummers' opinions. I'm glad you posted. It offers a point of view that may be shared by many others who haven't posted. Your review is every bit as valid as mine or anybody else's.
What's good for the goose, may not be good for the gander...
