Sonor Snare Question Last viewed: 37 minutes ago

Hi all. I have a new found appreciation for Sonor these days. I've a couple of nice snares from the 60's / 70's. No brass shells as of yet, but a couple of nice phonic era ferro manganese types that sound great!

I'm not too knowledgeable about Sonor as I'm new to vintage Sonor. I picked up this snare drum pictured here and my concern is the lugs. Are these Sonor lugs? I think what I might have here is a D440 model that originally came with plastic lugs. Perhaps these lugs pictured were used to replace the original plastic lugs. I'm not sure. Can anybody identify these lugs? Any information would be welcomed.

Thanks in advance.

There is a lot of lug splay which would cause me to assume the lugs are not original. If you remove one lug the shell might show some marks from the original lug which would verify that they are replacements.

Good advise. If I'm not mistaken the original lugs would have been plastic. What I would like to know is what are these lugs that are on the drum now. I've seen a similar design on MIJ snares, but never on a beaded shell. Could they be Japanese or European I guess is what my question is.

Is it six or eight lugs ? Is there an indication of a lick-n-stick foil badge to the right of the throw ?

It`s a drum,.....Hit It !!

Snare is an 8 lug model. There is no sticker. Maybe at one stage there was a sticker. I'm not sure. The throw off is the same as the one on my Sonor Swinger model D440. I'm guessing that the original plastic lugs were taken off and replaced by the lugs you see in the photos.

I don't have the drum just yet. It's on it's way to me. There is a photo where you can see the inside of the shell and it looks as if somebody put a veneer of wood or something lining the inside of the metal shell to cover up the factory holes for the lugs. If it is a Swinger model then the hole spacing would be bigger for these replacement lugs and the shell is drilled. I'm guessing that I can't see the original factory holes for the plastic Sonor lugs because there is a layer of wood or something inside the drum. If you look at the photo you will see what I mean. This doesn't look like a steel shell on the inside and it's definitely not chrome over wood. The shell is beaded, yet flat on the inside.

Here is a photo of the inside of the shell. Not the best photo, but it's what I got for now.

To me the lugs appear to be early Slingerland... Broadcaster vintage...

Or a copy of same..

Cheers

Very interesting. Thanks John. I hope you're right. They do look alike, but you know those MIJ drums were famous for copying classic US drums. I'll get to the bottom of it soon. :)

Would be interesting if they are Slingerland lugs. I have a few drums with those lugs on them and the scalloped peaks are more pointed. The lugs on drum in question the scalloped peaks seem wider at the tip and slightly rounded over. Hard to explain but this pic might help. It shows the peaks are sharper/pointy. I have both the longer bass drum size 3" and the shorter tom size and both are the same shape. Maybe there was another version of them I don't know about? Anything is possible.

Glenn.. I see what you mean.. I don't have any of those lugs to look at but the ones on Mark Coopers Pic do seem a little more rounded..

Hell Knows...
