Sonor Snare Question Last viewed: 2 hours ago

Would be interesting if they are Slingerland lugs. I have a few drums with those lugs on them and the scalloped peaks are more pointed. The lugs on drum in question the scalloped peaks seem wider at the tip and slightly rounded over. Hard to explain but this pic might help. It shows the peaks are sharper/pointy. I have both the longer bass drum size 3" and the shorter tom size and both are the same shape. Maybe there was another version of them I don't know about? Anything is possible.

I had spotted this too, but I wanted to believe they were vintage Slingerland lugs, but I think I knew they weren't. This drum has a label on it from a music store that went out of business in the 70's which in my mind is cooler than having the original Sonor label on it. This is a drum that I will harvest for parts I got it on the cheap.

Snare is an 8 lug model. There is no sticker. Maybe at one stage there was a sticker. I'm not sure. The throw off is the same as the one on my Sonor Swinger model D440. I'm guessing that the original plastic lugs were taken off and replaced by the lugs you see in the photos. I don't have the drum just yet. It's on it's way to me. There is a photo where you can see the inside of the shell and it looks as if somebody put a veneer of wood or something lining the inside of the metal shell to cover up the factory holes for the lugs. If it is a Swinger model then the hole spacing would be bigger for these replacement lugs and the shell is drilled. I'm guessing that I can't see the original factory holes for the plastic Sonor lugs because there is a layer of wood or something inside the drum. If you look at the photo you will see what I mean. This doesn't look like a steel shell on the inside and it's definitely not chrome over wood. The shell is beaded, yet flat on the inside. Here is a photo of the inside of the shell. Not the best photo, but it's what I got for now.

I think I remember seeing that lining on a SONOR Stainless kit, Ya think this could be the snare from one ? I know of four Stainless steel SONOR kits.

It`s a drum,.....Hit It !!

Beats me! Drum pun intended there! Yes Sir

Really have no clue. My best guess is Sonor Swinger model that has had some work done on it. Perhaps the old plastic lugs crapped out from too much tension. They'll do that you know? When I tune my Swinger snare I go slowly and pray I don't hear that little crack sound. I want to keep those plastic lugs intact if I can.

The D440 was cataloged with the Action kit but could be ordered with any. The Swinger always had a 454 metal or 431 wood cataloged. Swinger started as a budget kit and ended as a semi-pro kit with little differences than the Champion series. If you got lucky, you could fit the lug drilling but it`s a looooong shot. I don`t see four holes so it`s probably a German or European lug with metric numbers.

I think those holes are there even though they're not visible on the inside of the shell. There seems to be some sort of layer lining the inside of the shell covering up the extra holes in the shell. I'll know more when the snare gets here.

I hope it`s my first guess, if it is lined like a SS kit and went with one, it would belong to one of very very few kits made.. But then again, the liner to hide holes sounds more likely.
