Spot the issues with this PowerTone! Last viewed: 2 hours ago

So, there I was, perusing eBay for nice snare drums, when I stumble upon this gorgeous Dayton-era Black Onyx Powertone. After I oohed and aahed over the shiny drum, it immediately struck me that it wasn't what it appeared to be. I'll post just one picture and see if everyone can spot the issues.

Here's the text of the auction...Rogers Black Onyx Powertone. Dayton. 14 X 5. Mint. Color is vibrant, no gouges or splits. Chrome is perfect, without corrosion. Strainer perfect. Comes with Impact bag. You will not be disappointed with this drum!

Oh yeah, it's item number 131716275194

Hoops. Springless Lugs. Wrap...much too clean.Maybe there is more if I look at the listing. He has been around a long time. And he has sold Rogers items in the past. This is not ignorance at work here.

Sharp eyes on that one Mark!

Hoops were the obvious one, but picking up on springless lugs was a good catch. Ploughman. Wrap is clean, but does look original to me. Will be interesting to hear what others say on that. I'm not sure how you would get the brownish highlights in a modern wrap, but I believe that was a function of the glue showing through on the original drums because the wrap was partially translucent. Ludwigs showed a similar browning, but in that case it may have been the mahogany outer ply showing through.

The last auction was for a red onyx set in the same configuration. A lot of parts had been changed out including, hoops, rods, floor tom legs and so forth. Hundreds of dollars worth of correction would be needed if you wanted to have everything right and had to obtain the parts from the Bay or similar sources.

You can extend the detective work with the bass drum. There are some very subtle items there too.

Looks like some paint over a couple of the corners of the paper tag, if that means something...?

Yeah that tag looks like its been carefully painted around. As for the rest of it, I don't know how you guys are telling issues from some pictures, other than it all looks a bit to clean to be true. If it is kosher so to speak its a lovely drum. And that bass drum too.

Bass drum - is it where the seam is on the wrap? I would've thought it should be under the spur so not visible in playing position. Indicates a re-wrap, if I'm right...

Yes, the rest of the kit; 12/14/20, is up for auction separately from the snare drum. As to the snare drum itself, here's what I immediately noticed... springless lugs, tension rods and hoops. The tension rods appear to be after market square-head machined variety. They are nice, but NOT Rogers. You can also see the non-period correct screws and washers for the lugs. I can't see the tag clear enough to tell if the shell has been painted.

And, as Ploughman said, this is NOT ignorance at work! I guess what irks me is that those bidding on it seem to be ignorant of the changes. The bid is at $409 at 6:30am this morning!

I did message the seller about the parts and let's see what he says. As to the rest of the kit, there are no really up close pictures to see the lugs and tension rods, but all does appear OK with these. Not sure about the bass drum wrap seam. I don't have my Rogers kit here to check the bass drum.

Anyway, I just hope whoever wins the snare drum won't be too disappointed when they learn, and see, about the parts in question.

I'm attaching pictures of the label and one showing where the seam overlap is located. The picture size had to be cut down to fit into the allowable size for VDF. Don't forget to click each picture so you can see it larger...if you have a decent size monitor! Still, you can see that the overlap is correct, but doesn't mean it's not a rewrap. As to those tension rods, you can make out the grinding marks on the head. Rogers was well into the tension rod heads with the little "blips" around them.

I hope the seller gets my message and responds today. Will let you all know.

Lots of unusual stuff in that snare drum. Bass drum has wrong claws that you can see on one side. On other pictures in the sale, wrong mount for the cymbal arm. That's a floor tom leg mount on it right now. I believe the wrap is original on all the drums though. Every seam is in the correct location and correct direction. If it is a re-wrap it's a nice enough job for me and kudos to the guy that wrap it, but I'm quite convinced it is original wrap.

For the current prices, not bad. Later on it will become an issue buying the snare if it has been repainted and you have to buy correct parts. No so much on the kit.

Do love that finish though and fun exercise on correct Rogers parts Mark.
