Student Model Radio King? Last viewed: 1 minute ago

I have a teens or twenties Ludwig like that and it sounds awesome. In fact, one of my friends has been using it the last couple of weeks for gigs paired with his 30's Radio King bass and only the bass. The snare has so much "filling" tone and is really great to hear with a band.

30's Radio King - 26, 13, 13, 16
49 - WFL Ray McKinley - 26, 13, 16
58 - Slingerland Duco
58 - Slingerland Krupa Deluxe
70 - Ludwig Champagne Sparkle - 20, 12, 14
70 - Ludwig Champagne Sparkle - 22 (need), 13, 16
And some others..

That so clean and pretty, that drum.

Big deep old snares. People either love them or hate them. For a lot of folks, they are just unused to that sort of sound.

It's just a different sound...young whippersnappers used to hearing a really dry, crackly, tight snare drum never tend to like these. It lease to the urban myth that deep snare drums go out of tune. IMHO, it's not that at all. It's just that the depth results in more of an echo chamber so there are more overtones.

There are tons of different sounds one can coax from a snare drum.

Great stuff.

This post answers my question and it looks like mine is a Student Model Radio King with eight lugs, the badge indicates pre 1962, made in Chicago. The fellow who gave it to me says he has had it since 1963 when it was purchased new in Canada.

Does anyone know what the value of it is? In original condition, all intact and playable?

Post a photo. A one-owner drum, that's cool.

This has been very informative to me. I just snagged one that used to be just like that on. I hope I can restore it to its original condition, after I finally finish my sonors. i will photo the whole process and see before and after.

Mine has contact paper over the natural finish.
