I found these in a pump house. They had been there for 20 years. Lucky the shells were round, and the wrap was tight. Lots of polishing and cleaning. See last picture.

Drumsmack,

BEAUTIFUL

They look new.

What did you use on the bass drum hoops for paint?

You, sir, are a resto king.

I love any and all resto pics, as I also do my own work.

I'd like to see how you did the bearing edges. Before, during and after. Every vintage wooden drum I own has needed bearing edge leveling and restoration.

For me, it's the most critical step, as it actually affects the sound of the drum, not just the appearance.

I use a sanding table which is a piece of birch plywood with sandpaper glued to it for the leveling, a surplus granite counter top to check the leveling, and then a router table for the bearing edge restoration.

A small roundover cut on the outside and a 45 on the inside. Many passes cutting a little more off each time to preserve as much wood as possible. Then ease a little sharpness off with hand sanding.

It's not exactly like the original factory edges (which were not necessarily that great when they shipped), but it's also not a modern 45/45 knife edge.
