Super Ludwig COB quick question Last viewed: 2 hours ago

Hi all. I'm just wondering if anyone has ever seen or heard of etched or stamped characters on the inside of the shell on a pre=serial Super Ludwig Supra-phonic COB shell? In particular the letter "S" I don't know of any stamps other than date stamps inside any Ludwig shell and I'm wondering if anybody has any more information on this?

Thanks in advance

Doesn't ring a bell with me. Anything of the sort could have been added in the past 50 years or maybe someone did it at the factory but I don't think it was anything you'd typically see. At least mine and any others I've looked at don't have it.

Hi, I'm not 100% sure that it is COB. It has a pre serial number badge, crimped snare beds, good chrome plating job (no pitting) and it has the earlier verion heavy cast lugs so it ticks a few of the boxes for being a brass shell. The letter "S" is actually written inside the shell by hand.

It's an eBay snare that I took a risk on. Hoping it's COB. I'll know more when I have it in my hands and I can inspect the flanged bearing edge to check for the curl. Photos are not conclusive, but my gut tells me it's COB

The weight falls just short of 8lbs, but it's missing the top brass hoop and has a modern Ludwig die-cast hoop on there. I know those things are heavy, but the lugs are period correct for a COB shell. Also it has a baseball bat style tone control with red felt muffler. I know the COB shells have the round tone control, but they also had the baseball bat??

I don't at the moment, but I will share plenty of pics when it arrives. I assume it's brass though. Usually when you see the older style lugs on a pre-serial it's brass right? My Supraphonic from 1964 weighs between 5 and 6lb. What is the average weight of the Brass shells? I mean fully assembled with hoops, heads, lugs, rods and strainer. I hear a little over 8lbs. The one I'm buying is just under 8lbs. Any idea what the weight of the Ludwig die-cast hoops are? If the weigh a couple of pounds then maybe the shell is Ludalloy.

Hmm.. I.m.h.o. a 5x14" w/ 8lbs with die-cast hoops sounds like Luda....Probably
