Supraphonic Flaking... Regional pattern? Last viewed: 14 seconds ago

Loading...

Just thought I'd start a poll to see where you think your Supra lived most of it's life, and whether or not it has plating issues.

I just went through two 1970 and 1971 Supras out of the northeast which had/have excellent plating.

Wondering if humidity and temp is involved, as the Northeast is less humid and has dry "heat" in your house over the winter.

---

I have it set where you can vote multiple times if you own multiple Supras.... Ok, I THOUGHT I did.... :) Ill see if I can fix it... Ok, I thought you could vote four times for no flaking northern if you had four non-flaking northern, but apparently not. So, maybe just vote once, with a check mark for multiple answers, but only one quantity per check mark... I think that makes sense. :)

I think the results of this poll won't be accurate.

Snare is not a car - most of time outdoors. Flaking is not only because of air conditions, it is also working conditions temperature, transportation etc.

Those are the same...doesnt matter if north or south of usa

I don't think, I KNOW where my supra has spent all its life. It was my dad's and when he passed, he left it to me. It has ZERO plating issues and was regularly gigged with from new in 1968 to about the mid-1990's, when he got his limited edition Ludwig African Satinwood snare (which I also now have). It's been in New England all of its life and as I stated, it has no issues with the plating. I think it has more to do with overall care of the instrument, rather than regional location in the US.

I have a '63 Supra that I purchased in SoCal, and I believe it spent its life there. It has some pretty bad plating issues, but I refuse to do anything about it since it sounds so super sweet!

A poll based on date might be more accurate. This would tell US if there were any date ranges where the plating line might have had issues.

I don't believe that problem lies on chrome plating process itself.

I don't know when exactly massive flaking problem appeared. Let's say 10 years after ludalloy shell introduction, so it means ca. late 70's... This could be confirmed by experienced forum veterans.

What I can say is that when you manufacture a shell in according to norms - you have a range of tolerance of chemical composition of alloy supplied. This could answer why some shells have minor and some major pitting problem.

It can be any date, the problem is period of production/different shell supply etc.

The question in poll is on minor impact condition, in my opinion.

'Ludalloy' does not take chrome plating well at all. I have no idea what is in Ludalloy, but it's a hit and miss operation whether the plating will still be there a few years down the road.

It most assuredly -is- a plating problem. Well-known fact for years. Not a regional/climate issue at all.
