Tell me what you would do........please read. Last viewed: 6 hours ago

Ok, I will try to make this fairly short but I would like to hear the opinion of each of you that takes a minute to read this...

My mom bought me a nice set of Vintage 1968 Ludwigs when I was young. I loved those drums and played them everyday. Fast forward many years and I had gotten married and was moving from NY to NC. I sold that drum set to a guy that I worked with at the time. I hated to get rid of them but I couldn't take them with me. My mom was very upset with me that I sold them and really never let me live it down. Again, fast forward....my mom passed away about 8 years ago and it still bugs me to this day that she was upset that I got rid of them. Well.....the other day I was able to locate the guy that I sold the drums to and per his wife on the phone, the drums are sitting in the corner of his basement. Keep in mind, he doesn't play drums, he plays guitar so they aren't even being used. Well, he hasn't returned my call yet but I am hoping that he will consider selling them back to me. On top of wanting to get them back for myself, my 7 year old daughter is starting to play now and would love for her to not only learn on the set that I played on but play the set of drums that the grandmother she never got to meet bought for me.

So.....if you were him, what would you do?? I really do want feedback, I want to know if I am being stupid about wanting them back or are my sentimental feelings justified??

Hey your feelings are justified. Hopefully he will be fair with you and sell them back to you for a bit more than you paid for them. I sold my first kit to a friend years ago and found him on facebook and wanted to know if he still had them.....no luck. I wanted them back for the same reason as you, for my kid to have and play.

To give you counterpoint- I suggest you can find another kit of the same year- I had to do tsomething similar and it really did feel ok. Some times it`s good to move on a little bit. I had a very nice cymbal I won in a drum-off as a kid which I then sold after a few years. I thought it "wasn`t my sound" - well, 20 years later I wanted that sound and that cymbal- I looked but they are way out of production of course---- I found another of the same model that sounds even better. I am happy to be reunited with the memory even though it`s a different pie.

Go ahead for your own happiness. Be careful about how much you load on to the young one--she may be a nascent bass player or something and just not perceive the value and history the same as yourself. (Been there.)

I'd say..na..leave it alone...What did you say his number was:D:D..only kidding!

You are doing the right thing! My daughter has played clarinet in the school band now for two years and last year a friend gave back to me my clarinet (from when I was a kid) that I sold to him 20 years ago...he knew Molly was in the band and thought she would want it. She thought it was pretty cool!!

Keep us up-dated.

I think both suggestions are justified. I would take a shot at getting it back...but, again, if he doesn't choose to reply to you...well, you don't wanna start becoming too pushy, y'know ?

But...I mean, besides cash...you could offer to swap that kit for a newer or different one of equal or greater value. My guess is you'd be making him a good offer given the meaning it holds for you. So....hopefully he will respond.
