Burger Kin Evidently I need to get used to the fact that the 10 is the new 12. And the 12 is the new 13. And an 18X22 is the new 14X22. Well, I'm just not interested. A 10 is a "side" drum, an extra, not a main component of the configuration. And the extra-deep bass drum is a big fat "meh". I just finished listening to a dozen different mid to high end factory sets on YouTube, most of which sounded pretty much the same and one of which, a very expensive "boutique" set from a California builder, sounded like a set of CB 700's. I love vintage drums. They are an extension of me, the player, not joolery* or a gold tooth. ANNNNND- so much for that rant.
The 10 is the new 12- Last viewed: 2 hours ago
Anything past 16" deep bass drum wise Doesn't interest me in the least. I had a Beautiful Sonor Delite kit with a 17" deep bass drum I tried so hard to like it. I couldn't stand it. I like traditional sizes plain and simple.
Had a 8x8 for over 10 years and barely used it, just seemed cool to have with my modern Tama Granstar Custom kit. Finally decided to unload it, $500 for 1 8x8 tom!
Anyhoo, the kit also has a 10, 12 and 13, ordered the 10 with the kit to try and be like Stew Copeland way way back in '89, so the idea of having/using a 10 isn't really a new concept :)
I love me a 10 and a 12 as they are both the same standard 8'' depth and just look nice to me that way when set up. Kind of missing the 8x8 now.
I know what you mean though, I guess newer fusion 10'' toms are 9'' deep and the 12'' is 10, that's just too deep to set up on a 22 kick, fine on a 20'' or smaller though.
Any kick deeper than 16'' is just plain ugly, even my 16's that I have are a stretch!
Loves me a nice old fashioned 14'' deep kick!!
Loves me a 20x14 and a 18x14, although I don't have a 18x14 :(
Loves me some vintage drums, but I also loves me my not so vintage set of '89 Tama's...
I'm with the rest of you...love traditional shell sizes! Bought a PDP X7 some years back and hated that 18x22 bass drum! What a pain getting it in/out of a car! All my current kits have 14x20 and 14x22 bass drums, along with all the other "traditional" drum sizes. I'm happy!

I prefer 14 or 16 depth kik drums and only ever owned that sort of drum. But I've played longer without any problem. You can get a really good "doof" out of them. Great for loud punchy playing. The only thing with over 16's is it gets impractical to move them around, get them through a door or into the back of the car. And I do believe its easier to get that low sub rumble from a thinner 14" shell.
As for 10" toms. They rarely do it for me. In the hands of the right player on the right gig then maybe, but they usually annoy me. I watched Keith Carlock playing with Steely Dan at Coachella this year. Wow what a player, and wow what a band but still that was borderline 10" behaviour for me. You can just hear them "Binging" away. I'm such a 12" and up kinda guy!
As for the OP's vintage drum part of the rant. I know that Gretsch can make kit's today that sound the same as the old stuff. I recently played a DW kit that blew my pants off. It sounded like a 50's Gretsch but bigger. Honestly it stupefied me. But there is a magic about playing an old kit that's had time to bed in and get it's sound, and a history.
The problem is, wether brand new or 75 years old I still sound the same! I can't get away from me.

I like big drums, they are easy targets to hit, lol!
I really like my kits with 14", 16", 18" toms and either a 14x22, or 14x24" kick. However, those 14x20 kicks sure surprise me, especially my Camco.
I saw a guy the other day with a 10", 16" 26" kit and right away thought the 10" was out of place, but to each their own.
Thank you!

Definitely a fan of the classic sizes here. Currently all about 20/12/14, because Club Dates. :)
Here's an interesting thing I've been thinking about these long bass drums - if you start with a 14X18" jazz BD, and add 2 inches to both measurements, you get 16X20", and then 18X22".....so I wonder if the modern long bass drums are sort of "blow-ups" of, or based on the "aspect ratio" of, jazz bass drums, only bigger. I mean I wonder if that's where they got the idea....maybe not; just a thought.

10" will never be the new 12" for me. :)

Yes that's good logic to me. 20x24 then a whopping 22x26. 24x28 anybody?? Monster!
