The Early Bop Configuration 20,13,16 Last viewed: 5 minutes ago

I like my '65 Ludwig "Super Beat" configuration (20/13/16). Particularly the dual mufflers and dual Club Date spurs. I'm seeing more and more of these lately.

Over the years I've had all the sizes you list Manny. About the only one I really didn't have good use for was the 18,12,14 configuration, especially given the $$ you tend to tie up with that small bass drum. So I sold those off. Right now I have enough in Rogers jet black to do about all I need with the exception of a 22" bass. However, after I've tried this 20,13,16 configuration live, I've got a feeling I won't need the 22 bass for what I going to be doing.

I'll just point out, as far as I know, the estimable Phil Collins never used anything bigger than a 20" bass drum. They had some pretty big stage setups, a lot of music going on, Chester Thompson, Bill Bruford up there with him. I think 20" bass drums just really punch, you know?

And of course if you know you're always going to be mic'd...

That's because he couldn't see over a 22"...

100% agree the 20" has much more usefulness. Although I would argue that many much less expensive kits with an 18x14 sound great. I had a $400 or so Sonor 12 14 18 bop kit that sounded great.

Overall I really think nothing is wrong with a 13 16 20. Often on gigs with my Sonor drums I will take out a 12 16 22. My next kit I am getting from Sonor will be really cool and exactly the sizes and finish I want.

I think most people in the vintage and collector groups flock to a 12 14 20 for perceived value. To that end my Clubdate in 12 14 20 sounds just as good as a downbeat at a much nicer price.

Aaaah, those stands are so flimsy...

Great photo! What was the reason for Gretsch stealing the "jazz drums" position from Slingerland, anyway? Was it just the small bass drums?
