The seed that started Jenkins-Martin Drum company Last viewed: 2 hours ago

My Monster!

In February it will have been 8 years since I found this kit which began the journey that has come full circle and now have me building fiberglass drums along with my partner David Martin.

Today is the first time I have taken this kit out of a storage closest to set them up and play. It is no small task to get this beast up and running.

When I look at them and play them I remember why I was so inspired to restore them as well as now build them. After I partially restored this kit and heard what they could do, I sold off most of my other kits. They had a sound that was just unbeatable in my book. I think it was three of the four kits I had at the time. This is definitely a "make you smile" while you are playing kit!

They took me down an amazing path that continues to this day. I found this forum and others that helped me understand what I had when I was really not familiar with Blaemire, although I vaguely remembered the name from when I worked in a drum shop.

They immediately had members here telling me about their past with Hal Blaine and how rare they were to find. I met a handful of great drum builders who encouraged me to start producing these again. After about four years of restoring dozens of them as well as selling them to forum members, David Martin approached me and asked me if I had ever thought of reproducing them. When I told him I had already sent two samples to out of country sources, he offered to wind them here in the US.

The rest is history!

David and I both are still inspired by what Allen Blaemire accomplished in his garage in Eagle Rock California. His drums played by Hal Blaine were the sound of my youth! He was a Renaissance man!

I am humbled to build these drums. I still cant believe I met him, made a connection and now build these incredible drums like he did. It is just too cool!

The black shells are what they looked like when I first got them.

I have added 4 drums to the original 7. Most were NOS shells I got from Allen himself.

Great artists are rarely recognized in their own time.

Jerry, whether you realize it or not, -you- are greatly responsible for re-popularizing Allen's creations and bringing back the name 'Blaemire' making it even more well-known among drummers than Allen himself was able to accomplish.

Everything I know about Blaemire drums has come from following you and your exploits, first at DFO for a couple of years, then here at VDF ever since. It's been an education. Google yourself! I think even you will be impressed with the amount of information you have generated over the last four years or so.

Hang in there, Jerry. Your company is making a name for itself and I'm convinced that the drums you are making today will be the 'Classics' of future generations. You've made a place for yourself in drum history. That's really saying something, man. Future books about American made drums will include mention of J & M drums.

John

PS - Those black shells are exactly what mine look like. I like the combination of black drums with the natural green snare you made for me. Unique sounding drums.

Too many great drums to list here!

No. That is a Signature/custom 21" ride that was made for Mario Calire. He wanted a certain sound that Paste was able to create for him. It sounds awesome with this big rock set up

Love the Pastes. I have an 18" Sound Creation Dark crash coming via UPS tomorrow!

I can see that because of the vintage kit, but there are two problems with that.

I am "flying" the bass drums to the left and right of the rack toms. Those are DW remote pedals so they can reach the bass drums. The other problem would the room needed for multiple leg stands to hold the toms would not allow for the pedal placement. I wish I could work it another way...but this is it for now.
