There’s a reason the Monkees’ Micky Dolenz plays drums that way: ‘I know it’s bizarre Last viewed: 7 minutes ago

From Wayne Brown

This was my style of playing in 1967(talk about weird?) Took me awhile to figure out i could stradle the snare.I wanted the snare on my left side as that`s the way i perceived the way all other drummers played, but they were righties so i tried to copy them.Being a left footed bass drum player it took me awhile to get my proper configuration sorted out.WayneTommy,i hope the pic`s not off the scope?

Amazing how the brian tells us how to act on a drumset.

I never cease to be amazed at the pictures Wayne has archived. Priceless.

Wayne,

What a goofy set-up. Just a marvelous picture and one that really brings me back to those days! I think the thing that cracks me up the most is that you had absolutely top flight equipment, but still had to figure out how to set it up. The world of the lefties is a marvel to those of us otherwise handed. All we had to do is look at the pictures of the famous drummers and we were home free. Bass on left foot makes perfect sense. Was the right-handed approach at the top just something you fell into naturally?

Thanks Mark and as i look at it...it`s becoming ancient,i was 17.

Dan,i guess i`m somewhat of a pack-rat,thus the archived pics. And you`re absolutely right about me having "no clue" as to how to set them up to my playing style.I went thro` many configurations until i finally found the lefty match i was looking for and i never ever took those brand new Rogers forgranted. With the bass on the left foot/hi-hat to my right everything is opened up for my left hand to move around the set unrestricted and my right hand moves easily from hi-hat to ride cymbal without moving it across my body. And yes... the right handed approach at the top just came naturally to me,yet odd as i`m left handed.Left footed/left handed-very weird indeed thus the goofy set up i was experimenting with.

Wayne...cool picture and cool drums, you still have them by any chance?

all this righty, lefty handed talk makes me think of my grandson Jude. everything Jude does, he does it right handed except...playing the guitar and shooting rifles, he holds both of them left handed. no matter how many times we hand them to him in a right handed manner, he flipps them over to the left handed position. he writes, colors and draws, eats, throws and bats with his right hand but he plays the guitar and shoots a gun left handed. is this normal or just him being a kid? he is only six yrs old. we pretty much gave up trying to teach him different, he is pretty insistent on being left handed when it comes to those two activities.

sorry for hijacking this thread, but it just got me thinking about it.

Mark, i sure don`t mean to be hijacking your thread and apologies if i have, but people seem to be interested in this lefty style-we`re weird i guess and somewhat facinating in that respect.

robyn64, yes i still have them after all these years and i`ve got to get them out of there cases and play them again. It`s been 33 yrs. since there last performance,so there jumping at the chance to sing yet once again.Very cool about your grandson Jude(love that name), being somewhat ambedexterous in his righty verses lefty thing and totally normal when the brain thinks this way and i was the same when i was his age.Don`t question and don`t push his natural ways as it will all unfold in the end and he`ll be sure to find his way.

Glenn,"Hi Glenn",hope all`s well with you my friend and yes i still have the bass drum head, but it`s an insert of cardboard that fit over the original Rogers bass drum head which i still have also. This insert likely muffled the bass too much but i was just having way too much fun at the time! The band was called"The Hands of Tyme".

Best,

Wayne

Wayne! you've had them beauties locked up for 33 yrs? man, that's not right. cant imagine em being that bad to get locked up for so long. get 'em out and play them as they deserve. i think it is very special when a person can say i still have my first _ _ _ _ or i have my (family members) _ _ _ _ . you and i are two of the lucky ones to have that bragging right. so just get them drums out of the cases and make them sing.

Jude is my oldest grandson. i have 3. love the name too. we dont try to change his way anymore, dont do any good coz like i said, he flips to the left hand. it just makes it more challenging for us to teach him, we all play (and shoot ) right handed, even his grandpa tug who is left handed. when he gets a lit'l older we're gonna teach him to play a right hand guitar left handed. right hand guitars are more common and he will always be able to play. later down the road he can learn to play a left handed guitar. then he will be doublely talented and play any guitar available. oh and the drums...he plays right handed :)

ps...thanks Mark for letting us steal your thread. very cool of you.

Robyn
