I've said it before. . . Its a GD growing trend that copy cats are jumpin on board with. Not only splitting up kits but dismantling and selling the parts of matching kits. P00der/LeeCountytakeapartscounter. Effen stupid and a slap in the face to the vintage drum community. . . There is a forum member on DFO that was lucky enough to get ALL of the drums in a split up auction of a RARE one off original Gretsch duco WMP. Brown on the edges and fade too the WMP in the centers. INCREDIBLE. . They were offered in separate auctions. . . WHY?? who the hell is gonna grab just a tom? to match it to what???? He had to work a side deal to get all of them. Last year there was a trans badge OYSTER PINK PEARL Lud kit. .. 4 auctions. . Luckily Bun had the where with all to make a deal and keep them all together. Ridiculous
This Really Chaps My Hide!!!! Last viewed: 42 minutes ago
Me Too..This gets under my skin too..A seller right now on Ebay is selling a 1964-65 set of Ludwigs in B.O.P. in 5 auctions 3 13" toms a 16" and 22"..They do this on all the drum sets they post. They also list the hardwear in auctions to that came with the sets..I for one will not or ever would brake up a set of vintage drums.I only sell them as a whole set..Mikey
I totally agree! I just don't understand why anyone would split up a kit like this. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!
Because people try and cut down the price and don't want to pay what the kit is worth... there is worth to a complete kit more so than parts I know I jave had the same experience I had a WMP londoner fullerton in 9 out of ten shape with all stands and hard cases I was asking 1500.00 everyone balked no takers I was asked if I would break up the set I said NO i held firm and I sold it for exactly what i was asking but it took a few weeks . In this economy people probably need their money quicker... If we want to stop this practice of splitting up sets you need to pay for them or stop buying parts and orphans..IMO
I agree. Someone just sold a Rodges 20/12/14/tower snare in Red Onyx on ebay this weekend. Looks same guy got them all, but how ****ed would you be if you got all but one?
I watched those listings. That guy payed 2000+shipping for the bass, tom and floor. I didn't see what the snare went for. The FT was a 14x14 but that kit had issues, it was by no means mint. It did have "Franks Drum Shop" stickers on it maybe that adds value to it, I don't know?
One of the VDF members who checks out EBAY daily should start a thread that lists the drum strippers and guys who split up kits. Then, any member or guest could just reference the list before bidding to ensure he is not supporting this practice. I am not an EBAY regular or I would do it myself and not pass the buck with this simple suggestion.
Any member could add to the running list with a seperate post and the original poster could periodically edit his original post, to include all of the additional Ebay sellers, to keep a more user friendly list all in a single post. It would take an extra thirty seconds to check the list before possibly supporting a drum stripper/seperator. Perhaps it could even be a sticky as this practice represents a clear and present danger to the future of many vintage drums and a forum with membership such as the VDF should do something to battle these profiteers.

The red onyx set sold to the same guy for $2400.13 before shipping. Who knows what it would have sold for as a kit.
I see both side of this as I am on both sides of this, let me give a perfect example as to some reasons this occurs. I have listed countless times in the For Sale section on this forum and have only transacted a few sales. Just last Friday I listed a 50's radio king that I had taken a year to piece together, I listed it at a very competitive price guess what No takers, I take it to ebay which will cost me an 18% fee for doing so,I almost doubled my money on the asking price I had it listed for here. I will just continue to use ebay now instead of the forums For Sale Section, It cost me far more in shipping cost, time to drive to UPS which is a 16 mile drive, Packing materials are not free that I have to eat , but it does pay off usually. I have a drum kit now that I've listed countless time on this forum and another one. No takers, I will part it out one drum as a separate auction, Yes to maximize my profit, I'm a capitalist and very proud of it. I love vintage drums, but I also love to eat, and pay my bills. I've never taken a penny from our useless Government, And will continue to support myself as I see fit to do so.The Ludwig kit that is in question, If you are the high bidder how will you not end up with all the drums that are with the kit?? No snipping software will ever beat the highest bid NEVER!!
Very well said Vintagemore2000, maybe you should run for president!
I really don't get why some are so upset of the practice of making money, I mean I love vintage drums, but really, there are far worse things in this world then someone making a buck or two. They are doing nothing illegal, so what's the point.

I agree, but have experienced dishonest dealings AFTER the bidding begins. More than once on ebay, i have been the current high bidder on drums that were split up. Then the auction mysteroiusly ends, no explanation. My guess is some other buyer(s) contacting seller and doing seperate deal. Why, I don't know. But, I am in favor of keep kits/sets together. I have a feeling most drum buyers prefer it and splitting may discourage many bidders. Do guitars get taken apart and sold piece by piece?!

Very interesting, thanks. Your sales experience trumps mine. I wonder if there are any marketing studies available ,on auctions, comparing profits on splitting vs. keeping sets ( of anything) together? Any madmen or women here?

There are always complaints about parts sellers.......
How come there is never any praise for the many vintage sets that are complete now, thanks to them?
