Tips for selling on eBay anyone? Last viewed: 20 hours ago

I've never sold on eBay but I have looked at their policys and fees. Seems way to complex.........I think they should just charge a flat rate or 1-2%.

I'm thinking of giving them a go with one or two drum kits.

Anyone here have experiences (positive / negative) regarding their experience selling drum kits via eBay that they would like to share?

As a new seller, ebay will hold your money for 3 weeks or until the buyer leaves positive feedback...After 3 months, you will get your money right away through paypal...

Kona,

1-2%...?..Don't we wish!

It's close to 13%..with Paypal fees involved......

Someone told me the other day it's closer to 15-20%...but I did the math on a few sales...and 13% seems about average....

DONT!, there fees &the fact there's MORE con artists/scammers on there then ANY OTHER ëcommerce"online selling website.I have a fee/prey bay store & if i DONT sell i STILL have to pay there fees! :( + you lose on the currency conversion &paying fee/prey "NOT"your "PAL"(Paypal).I'd personally someone sell on here or Gumtree or Cymbalholic.com.THAT'S WHERE most OF MY VINTAGE "PIES"(Paiste's) have come from except for one off here from Giant Beater.BUT if you HAVE TO &MUST selll on fee/preybay ALWAYS check the buyers feedback&other (if you're able to) overseas shipping.

Well that's my 2 bobs worth in(äussie "slang"for 2 cents worth) ! :).

I never sold anything on there either, but I have broken my own rules and bought a few things, and they went off without a hitch.

I did think that perhaps you should sell a couple smaller items to "get your feet wet" before you try to sell entire drum kits. This could allow you to see the ins-and-outs of the entire process, and then you could feel better about selling the kits.

I probably will never sell anything on there so this advice is probably not my honest opinion, but more of a suggestion.

Thanks guys.

I probably won't try it.

It's too bad some sort of bidding process could not be set up on Vintage drum forums.........somehow link them up and have members bid on vintage drums and gear. I know...........It's a crazy idea and would never fly.....right?

Actually, there kind of is a bidding process of sorts. You can sometimes come relatively close to what you'd get on eBay after fees if you list your items on multiple drum sites, and then bump them up with a lowered price at some interval until you get a bite.

Your results may vary depending on how specialized your item is.

1. Read all the rules of selling completely.

2. Be very clear and honest about your sale item. List all attributes as well as imperfections.

3. Take lots of photos, (all angles & close-ups) Make sure they are well lit and in focus.

4. Think very carefully about where you want to sell to. I keep getting Canadian's asking to ship to them from U.S. and have had some "dirty dealings" on their side.

5. Make sure you pack the item(s) as if a gorilla was going to deliver it.

(Insure it and require a signature upon receipt.) Pay for a tracking number, it's worth it!

IMO it is hard to make a profit on a product in a tight market.

Example:

If you bought a drum for $10 at a yard sale and it is actually worth $50, you will lose much of that profit on fee's/packing materials/time/shipping etc. so charge actual shipping fees.

(the more $$$ you ask for the item, the more $$ eBay gets.)

It would be a good idea to sell a few small items to get started. Don't lead with a big ticket item.

My experience is good for the buyer, bad for the seller.

Try craigslist or something free. Or selling/trading with you local drum shop.

I've been buying/selling on eBay since April, 1999. Things have changed allot since then! Still, with rare exception, I've had very good results, both as a buyer and a seller. My feedback is 100 percent, and for good reason... I'm honest and treat everyone the way I would want to be treated.

I've sold at least 5 complete kits over the years and never had any issues.

By all means, please start out selling small items and build up your feedback rating. I stay clear of first-timers selling big ticket items. That doesn't mean they are not to be trusted. It just means they need to understand the business world of eBay.

As to fees, I don't have too much of an issue. Yes, I wish they were a flat rate, but it is what it is. There is a selling calculator that lets you determine all your fees, based on selling price, etc. Works pretty good, too!

Yes, you need to be aware of all the scammers, but that holds true for Craigslist, too!
