Just restored a 1963 Slingerland kit. Came with a rail consolette mount, but the only part I have is the rail that attaches to the bass drum. The previous owner looks like he moved it more to the center. I plugged all of the holes with a wood dowel and glue before I covered it. I am either going to get a complete rail consolette OR use a snare stand for the tom and leave the bass drum the way it is. What are your opinions on this. Thanks

IMO, since you've already covered the holes, I'd just leave it with that "virgin" look and either use a snare stand or another type of tom mount stand.
Unless you're playing in a band that needs the "retro" look...

Tom will really go anywhere asked, but prefers to hang out with Dick or Harry.
Ahem...
I'm with Bill, use a snare stand since you've 'fixed' the holes.
Go with the snare stand. I always find that the toms on a rail sound a little more dead then if you put them on a snare stand.
My vote would be for the snare stand as well. But if you change your mind, since the drum is altered anyway,I would get the upgraded rail consolette from Steve Maxwell. Its a bit pricy, but it looks to be the business.

Yea, I am kinda torn, the more I look at the bass drum with the nice new sparkle wrap with no extra holes, the more I want to leave it, but then again, I like the look of the rail consolette also. Damn!
Snare stand.

Oh to have the ears that can actually hear the difference over the sound of the entire band! I have never bought in to this claim. In my own myopic opinion, a snare drum stand is intended for a snare drum. A tom tom mount is intended for a tom tom. And, each sounds best TO ME on its own respective support device. A rail device is the least intrusive shell mounted type of holder for the tom and the bass drum. The tom mounted to the bass drum brings added resonance to the tom and to the bass trum. Yes, the resonaces are DIFFERENT than they would be for the virgin shells. Different does not automatically translate to bad. In addition to this, I don't like the look of a tom perched on a snare stand. Again.....this is my opinion. We each like what we like. So. please don't feel like you have to play my drum sets with rail mounts.
Use snare stand or multiclamp with tom holder.
All best
